This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I have spoken to HRDC about being defaulted because they lost forms.

The response from HRDC was to call NSLC and ask to be transferred to the CSLP Case Management Centre.

Hope this helps some of you!

Mark

The NSLC conveniently looses my forms, applications and supporting documents. Once they claimed they didn't have it until I told them on the phone that I had the fax conformation number; only then did they admit they had my interest relief application. What I do is send it by mail and by fax then I call to make sure they got it, then I call back a couple days later so I can send them more missing information that they never initially asked for or lost.

It's always a huge process but I've been applying for interest relief (now repayment assistance) since 2007; so the trick for me, is just to keep on them and call bullsh*t because I believe they want you to default. It's nice to know it's not just me they're trying to screw over.

I'm also having a potential issue. I'm working FT now and applied for RAP. After I submitted my application, they wanted me to wait another 2 weeks to get the next month's pay stub and submit it. I submitted the day after it was available, but despite this they sent me a letter saying my application for RAP had expired.

I called twice since then and both agents I spoke to said that all the documentation was received on time and they don't know why my application expired. They just keep telling me to wait for correspondence.

The good news is that I have two recorded conversations with two different agents, and I got them both to confirm that I am in no way delinquent and will not be penalized. If they do try to default me, I will file a lawsuit for libel, since it goes on my credit rating.

Glad to know I'm not taking things personally! I too feel like there is a profit motive of CSLP due to their constant clerical errors, delayed correspondence and dogging any accountability on their part. And interest keeps collecting each day - of course it's intentional. You have to work hard at this kind of incompetence.

I'd like to know who holds Canada Student Loans Program accountable? Why isn't there a direct line anywhere? The staff themselves have acknowledged the negative feedback they receive, but say nothing will be done about it unless people write their MP and complain. If only they had a YELP profile.
