This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I could use some help.  I have actually declared bankruptcy and my student loans are actually the only thing I owe.  Although I am currently on Long Term Disability from my company and am supporting 2 children on my own.  I have actually not have had too much trouble except from the collection agency that is collecting for the provincial loan.  I have requested the forms for Medical Loan Forgiveness but they are quite confusing.  My loan is in serious default, like almost 9 years and I just want to clear it up.  I really do not have the resources to pay the 8000.00 dollars back and I really want to fix this because it really is the only real financial problem that I have.  I don't want my kids to have to pay from there inheriance they are 2 and 12 and are going to need all the money they get for there education and upbringing.  CSL has assured me that they will not go after my estate when I die, but who knows?  Does anybody have any suggestions.  I know that the collectors hands are tied because I am on disability but I really would like to get the amount reduced significantly or forgiven.

Robbie

It is a confusing matter when it comes to filing long-term diasability holds on student loans. You would simply negotiate witht he province to put the account on hold once you substantiate your inability to pay. Sometimes, the provincial government(s) will tell you to communciate these issues with their assigned collection agency, and that is even more frustrating because the colelctors do what they can to collect at the same time.

Your best bet is to go directly to the province with medical documentation that substantiates the claim, and request that they mail you a long-term disability kit that you would file inthe same way as with the CSLP.

As for debt reduction, I don;t know if you would qualify. The province that holds the loan will be able to tell you what your options are. The collection agency will probably tellyout hat you do not qualify. Contact the province for this type of matter.
