This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

My story is very similar to many on this board.  I decided to return to school in my late twenties.  For this I took a loan from CIBC that was well under CAD $10,000.  It was intended to help me live for a year without work as the course I took was so intensive it would have been impossible to work during that period.  After finishing school I found it difficult to find work and the bills started to add up very quickly.  I had never been in this position before and was overwhelmed by debt.  I eventually went through bankruptcy and left the country to live in my new wife’s home land in Europe.  I still had this one student loan on my shoulders and upon return to Canada in 2003 intended to begin making payments.  NCO Financial didn’t give me a chance to do the honorable thing.  As soon as I collected my first paycheque they were on my trail and so the harassment began for the following year and a half.  I will spare you the many and varied tactics used to take money that I did not have.  Suffice it to say I will forever hold a grudge and will not forget this experience.  I will use my voice and the written word wherever and whenever possible to expose the injustices that exist within this system.  I will also use my voice to suggest the assistance of people like John LeBlanc who exist to aid the many people who end up in situations like mine.

I finally settled the account a few weeks ago.  I had discovered this site recently and found immense comfort in the fact that so many others were having or had shared my experience.  In particular I came across the name John LeBlanc repeatedly.  I was at first suspicious due to the what I had been through but when NCO Financial agreed to a settlement offer I wanted everything to go through smoothly so I called and requested John LeBlanc's help. He immediately phoned the latest NCO rep that was harassing me and set the rules straight.  Later he took over Power of Attorney and was provided a copy of the contract I received.  Even at this late stage in the game I am so happy to have had John on my side. My greatest fear was that NCO would renege on the deal and take my settlement as a payment.  I had witnessed the tactics of these snakes first hand for such an extended period of time and was sure they had further tricks planned.  John walked me through the final laps of what has been an exhausting year and a half of my life.

I only wish that I had contacted John LeBlanc earlier.  His fee is miniscule compared to the relief that comes from having a man of his professional experience on your side who is quick to go to bat for you.  I really feel that he is one of those good people who understands the tricks of the less honorable and can play them and beat them at their own game.  He is also very good at helping to put many of the fears relating to this experience to rest.  I also am hoping to begin to rebuild my credit and will confer back to John for suggestions.  He has a wealth of knowledge.

I arrived back in my home and native land with my wife of new Canadian Citizenship with full intentions of settling this old debt. NCO Financial and the institutions that support and tolerate such establishments made me embarrassed to call this country home.  John LeBlanc went a long way in helping me regain some dignity in the place I would like to continue to call home.
