This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hey Guys,

This is regarding my credit card and not a CSL, but everyone here seems so knowledgeable this places seems as my only source of refuge.

In short, my credit card is in collections.  I sent them a payment today (the collection agency).  I work in real estate (just getting started) and told them I don't get paid again until April 29th, and that I would pay the debt off at that point and that there was No way for me to get money before then.  She told me that since I am a commission based worker, they can garnish 100% of my next cheque. Is this true? and if so, what are the steps they have to go through first.  Any information would be appreciated.

seersh,

I'm not sure that what she is telling you is 100% correct.....any garnishment action is a process through the courts with claims filed and a judge deciding on the outcome.

If you can pay it off with your next pay then do it....the CA will give you half truths and try to scare you so you pay earlier.  Tell her to read her 3rd party collection directives again...that should be right next to her at her cubicle.

You may want to visit the cfwgroup.ca site....it deals with consumer debt and has a lot of information to arm yourself with when the CAs do call.

Good luck!!

Now they called this morning, and said it was their litigation department.  This guy says it's his job to pursue legal action if he sees fit.  He has given me until Friday to come up with $1200 otherwise it's going to court.  He also tells me that I will not be able to work because I will not be bondable any more (and it's necessary) as a Realtor.  Says that I could possibly not be bondable for 10 yrs?  What the hell now?

I just spoke to the Real Estate Council of Ontario, and because of our errors and ommissions insurance we are not required to be bonded.  Do I have any grounds for a complaint?
