This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hi all. I posted my debt story in the 'describe your debt' forum, but nobody replied.

I've also called Johnny twice and left a message to call me back, but he has not.

So, I will attempt to find some more info/help on these boards and let you all know that I have contacted all my creditors and have talked to the two collection agencies who hold my guarateed and risk portion of my CSL. My hrdc portion is held by CBCL and the risk portion by CBV.  Approx. 9000 to Hrdc/CBCL, and 12000 to CBV.

I had been Ill since I left school and did not apply for any relief..went bankrupt, and loans have been in default since October 2003.

Both collection agencies have been very condecending towards me, and I expected such. I am still very fragile, as my illness is of a psycological nature, and I have just returned to work full time for the first time in 5 years. I am very determined to pay back my debts..I contacted the collection agencies after all! One thing I will not tolerate is any prying into my privacy and I have told the CA's this and they dont like it. My spouse does not give me permission to divulge any of her financial information (we have been separated and have a child together, and live together again now, yet pseudo-separated: she cared for me when I was sick, but my debts are my own to her and I am expected to pay my way now I am able to work).

So, do I have to fill out a financil statement for CBCL who hold my HRDC debt or not? Some on these boards say yes, others no. CBCL has told me that they will not accept any unautorized payments. I want to pay them $240 per month and keep my private info private. Will HRDC sue me for this? The CA I talked to at CBCL will not tell me to whom I must make out the payments to, nor where to send them..anyone know?

The CA from CBV was really snarky and tried to get me angry..but I held my ground and he gave me my account # and who to make payments to and where to send them. Will CIBC sue if I begin to make $200 payments on a 12000 dollar debt?

I just want to make them 'happy'without giving up my privacy or my spouses' (who does not give me permission) or give them any unreasonable reasons to badger me for more money.

Sorry for the long post..I hope I get some feedback.

OK
I think that for the Federal portion(CBCL) they can and will want to see spouse's information(they have access to it when you file your returns anyway). However from what I've read the spousal information has been ommitted from those paying back the bank portion.(CBV)
I am not sure that saying your spouse will not allow you to divuldge information will mean that you can get away from doing so.
My understanding is that in the vast majority of cases as long as you are compliant and making an effort to pay that they will not sue you. HRDC will also take your tax returns and any gst you might have owing to you in an effort to get their money.
Good Luck!

It was nice talking to you too, Johnny.

I will probably be calling you tonight to discuss my options with you further.

Talk to you later.

your spouse's refund is theirs, not yours.  only way it can be touched is if s/he cosigned your student loan.

CCTB money cannot be touched
