This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I went to school as a disabled student and thankfully they were very
helpful at student loan and sent me my application immediately when I
asked for it. I am on welfare and waiting to be approved for disability
pension from the government. My health worker accidently forgot to add
in my personal letter with my application and it was sent separate. How
must at risk am I that it will not be read along with the application? They
were sent priority on the same day (separately). I'm not sure how it will
turn out. I'm praying and wishing! Legally I have a permanent disability
and I qualify. I'm a bit concerned because my doctor said..."MAY return to
work and school if treatment is successful".....are they going to read this
and assume I will be cured?...I've lived with this illness for years and have
never been successful with any treatments. Are they going to read it as if
I will all of a sudden magically lose my disability? On what grounds would
I be rejected? or...more positive---approved?

thank you

You might want to try calling to see if in fact the two documents teamed up together at their destination.  They should be able to tell you.  Ask them for further guidance in this matter...(if the letter is not with the application what you can do..eg..resend...fax..etc.)

Or maybe someone else has experience with this.... and will post later.

Good Luck... if you are denied..find another doctor...that will recognize that you are permanently disabled.  Most doctors are reluctant to write you off... if they have hope that you can do some type of job.

There are organizations that help with retraining(at no cost I might add) to help enable disabled people re-enter the work force at suitable employment for their disability... your doctor may have been leaving the door open for this type of option... Not sure how it will read.

My mom couldn't get disability.. but was eligible for retraining $$$.

silence is a form of fear...fear of the unknown...has kept me silent too long

The government's NSLSC interprets things in a manner that justifies their decision-making and best interest. If it can be dtemrined that you "can" be cured, then it is not a permanent disability in their view.

If your disability is permanent but does not restrict you from acquiring employment, this is another hurdle to jump.

Send along a doctor's letter saying "my patient has had this condition since 19xx, has tried treatment A/B/C and D without response, and i expect her condition will not improve."

For disability claims, Conditions have to be seriously incapacitating to one's working ability, and they need to be prolonged/permanent [congenital/long-term/irreversible/fatal].

(NB. Doctors know that multiple conditions means worse prognosis, too)
