This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Quick background: My husband and I both have student loans in
collections, no income at all until recently. We're now on welfare pending
the outcome of my husband's disability application (he has a mental
disability which he has been avoiding treatment for for years, and I've
finally managed to persuade him to seek help, as it's getting worse not
better and he simply can't hold a job).

So, this morning bright and early, the phone rang and I answered it. It
was a collection agent who wanted to talk to my husband. So I said
(paraphrased) "I'm sorry, he is insane right now and can't come to the
phone." Told him that I knew what the call was about, and that although I
knew he couldn't give me any information, there was no reason I couldn't
give him some, which is what he needs anyway. So we had a long chat,
during which I explained the current medical situation, and agreed to
send him whatever paperwork we had to add to his files.

He suggested - in all seriousness - that possibly Raven was not actually
able to be helped by medical/psychiatric assistance because he was not in
fact ill but rather under a curse. Apparently this gentleman has known
several people who were under curses "in his area" and so knows what he
is talking about.

I said I certainly hoped that wasn't the case, as I didn't know anyone
qualified to remove unidentified curses, and that I was pretty sure Canada
Pension didn't recognize "cursed" as a category on their forms, so if he
was under a curse we were unlikely to be receiving assistance for much
longer.

Then he suggested that I think about going into business with him selling
knockoff polo shirts on Ebay. He said that he would provide me with the
shirts, and I could embroider little alligators on them, make up fake
labels, and we could then sell them for forty dollars and split the money!

Did I hallucinate this entire conversation? Have I not had enough coffee?
I'm reasonably certain that of a half-hour long conversation only about
three minutes of it was legitimate - whether or not the conversation was
actually legal I'm not sure - well ok, the Ebay part was crazy illegal, but
not in any way that invalidates his claim or anything, I don't think...
although it would be fun to know what his boss might think of it! I have
to assume that our conversation was NOT "being recorded for my
protection and to improve customer service"!

And he called back. About Ebay. From his office.

I said that it should be obvious we already had enough problems with
debt, I was not interested in incurring legal fees for false advertising and
copyright infringement, thank you!
