This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I was wondering that i recently got a house due to paying more for rent that what a mortage would cost. I could not do this myself my mother co-signed for me and she has good credit. I am a single mom of 2 children ans is working, but of couse only relying on one income it is very difficult. Also, i live in newfoundland. I have my federal student loan that went into collection on nov.2, 2001. I heard that once 6 years are up this is written off. They have asked for settlement of 4000.00 on the whole loan of 8000.00. Since december of 2004 i have been making steady payments of 25.00/month. They called me the other day and stated that i would either pay in full or go for the settlement, i could pay 25.00 for 6 months but they stated that they would not offer the settlement again and that once the 6 months is up that i would have to pay the loan in full, or they will garnish my wages, put a judgement and a lean on me or even possible sue.
I am afraid that they will take my house are they able to do this? Should i pay the payments or will it be written off in this comming november when it has been in collection for 6 years.

PLEASE PLEASE

My husband has an outstanding Canada Student Loan which went in the hands of a law firm in Ottawa.  For the past two years he has been making payments (minimal) towards the oustanding loan.  We have recenlty applied and been approved for a 2nd mortgage on our house to clear up some debt and do renovations on our house.  It turns out there is a Writ of Seizure and Sale against him registered on our house for this debt.  Which means we cannot register the 2nd mortgage because he has an execution against him.  We attempted to offer to settle the debt with this law firm for about 1/2 of what it is and now they are giving us the run around saying they need to approve the "compromise offer" with their client (the government) and it could take 60-90 days.  Does anyone know if you make an offer do they have to accept it?  I have read on this site a few people have been given an offer by the collector of the debt if they pay it by a certain date (which seems to be relatively quick).  Does it not work if the debtor is making the offer???  We want to clear this up ASAP so we can get the 2nd mortgage...does anyone have any advice.  Thank you

I just settled my student loan- NCO (UHG!!) I owed $27000.00 I offered them $9000.00 They came back with $12000.00 I counter-offered back $10.000 and they took it, under the condition that it be paid with transfer within 1 business day. You must have the money accessable (good thing for parent help).

Hi there,

I have a student loan however my question is regarding a different loan.  I need to know what they being collection agencies can and can't do.  Is it true that if you offer to pay a certain amount every month they can't refuse it??

No. You can claim that amount of interest paid.

Yes, it was intended for you.

You can only claim the amount of interest you paid as an expense, which will help you at tax time. It does not mean that you will recieve that amount as a refund.

How is that possible?! I just offered 70% of my CLS of $6500 and they won't accept it unless I provide all the information in the world including tax returns for the past three years, and if I refuse they will pursue legal action. Why is it that some people get these offers and others have to struggle along and worse, get bullied into paying the full amount, no reductions. I've been paying for more than 7 years and I'm pretty sure I've paid way more than what they say remains. What gives?

Also, does anybody know about a loan going from the collection agency (Accounts recovery corporation) back to Canada Revenue Agency? I filed a complaint with someone at 1-800-667-0135 who just said "complaint department", and I've never heard back on this issue. They requested that I send my settlement offer to them and they would forward it because the collection agency had not. Now it appears I'm dealing with CRA directly and they suggest legal action will be taken. I'm trying to do the right thing and all I want is a break after 7 years of paying through the nose.

Hello,
I spoke with a credit counsellor about collections agencies during a session regarding my loans and was given a fact sheet from Business Practices and Consumer Protector Authority of BC (BPCPA)- their #s are:(604) 320-1667 or toll free at 1 888 564-9963. I have also been advised by a few folks to tape all calls (something the fact sheet also recommends)with collection agencies and to let the caller know that your conversation is being recorded. And too, there is a book called Your Guide to Canadian Law(published by Fitzhenry & Whiteside) that has a blurb on student loans (right after their blurb on collection agencies!) My copy was $24.95; I'm sure a copy is also at a library.
Good-luck,
In the same (leaky)boat,
Tim

You do not have to tell the other party that the call is being recorded.

Hi~  I'm not in Canada, but I've been getting these bogus(?) "Social Development"  statements lately.  I know the phone number is for the credit agency, not a government office.  I really want to know why the payments I have sent them for the past 3 months are NOT reflected on this statement.  That's a couple of thousand dollars unaccounted for, as of March 2007!   Argh!   I've been through hell with these people, as have many others, I'm sure.

How can I get the truth about how much I owe???

The interest is being tacked on every day, and they're saying I haven't paid in months, which is not true. The cheques I sent were all cashed, made out to the Receiver General of Canada!!

possible suggestion:

write the federal auditor general and ask for an accurate statement of account the shows the actual amount owing.  Tell the Auditor General that you get statements that are wrong and not complete from a non existent department (there is no social development canada, only HRSDC).

Here is how to contact the auditor general
