This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Could someone make sense of what I was being told today?

I was inquiring as to why they were such pricks bac in the late 1990's to me (basically, I was clearly unable to pay and refused to make any concessions for 2 week "late" interest relief forms which were not late but I was just told to give them to the feds who didn't forward them on to CIBC).

I spoke to one lady who was as dumb as a bag of hammers.  No thinking outside the box for this girl.  She just kept repeating "The collection agency has your file".   I stunned her when I said, "what if I sued you...where would you get the file from".  She broke down and admitted, "That's all that I can tell you" (ie: that's what she has to tell me).  Then, her supervisor explained that I would have to get a copy of my file from the collection agency.  I even discussed the privacy act and he insisted that the collection agency had even all of their old notes.

I asked if his computer notes for the past 8 years were deleted.  He advised that they are "given" to the collection agency.  (Yeah right).

So I made it clear that I wanted to complain to CIBC and he still was claiming that I had to do it through the collection agency.

I grilled him for anyone couple of minutes and then he said that perhaps the NSLSC appeals dept could help me.  I asked if even for the clearly un-guaranteed portion...and he seemed less sure.

I suspect that either they have a contact to never discuss any past, present or future questions about the collection file OR CIBC has brainwashed their staff to dodge, deny, refer and do whatever necessary to BS people from getting ahold of any information that could possibly help them.

Any comments, suggestions?  I basically want to review their notes to confirm who "f" 'd up, when and why.

Thanks

The NSLSC will have your notes on file regardless of where it is sent.  See this link:

Thanks eshelton

Just to clarify.  Even though this is the portion that was not guaranteed by the government (because I also am paying off the government for the guaranteed portion) and despite the fact that I have only ever dealt with CIBC on this portion of the loan save for the initial application, the NSLSC will have the notes from CIBC explaining what they did and why they were such heartless SOB's.

A good example is that this all started back in 1998 but, despite my many efforts to start repayment asap (long story involving OPD), CIBC didn't send my file to collection until recently.  So the NSLSC, with whom I've never spoken, will have record of when CIBC sent my file to collections.

I definately appreciate the info, don't misunderstand me, I just want to be certain that the NSLSC would have records even for the unsecured portion before I begin my campaigne.

Thanks

A concern here would be that the records may be doctored.  It's been my experience that no one wants to 'fess up to having screwed up, and the myriad mistakes that may have been made will not appear in the notes ....

Sorry to be such a pessimist.  It's STILL a good idea to get copies of whatever you can .... there may be something in there you can use to rectify the situation.

Best of luck, and let us all know how it goes and what you find!
