This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

It was a good article indeed.  I felt like throttling some of the commentators though! "suck it up" indeed!

As Staretz said some of the comments were far from understanding or supportive of the problem. Only those who have personally experienced the CSL problems can truley understand.

The article as good as it was (in some ways) will fade away and get lost on the Globe and Mail's website like yesterdays news paper that went out with the trash.  Copyrights may keep us from having the news article on this website but can't stop us from placing our personal comments here, where they will more likely be accessible for future readers. .

Comment... re: Government accused of milking student loan plan

Canadian Press - July 22, 2007

Casey Crow
from Wild West, Canada writes:
Interest on my student loans was 12%.. Someone would make the profit on a loan with this kind of rate! Collection agencies get paid to collect while countless others make money on the program. As pointed out by Mark, if there is not money to be made, why would a US company set up a division to administer Canada student loans.. something is rotten here!

A little compassion please!

Until you have walked in our shoes and experienced pain and hurt you have no right to judge!

Our government gives millions of $$$ to big business and other countries yet treats students with financial problems like sh*t!

After experiencing personal tragedies, not being unable to work and/or pay our student loan we we fed to the dogs and left to manage with no help. Debt collectors call you names, swear at you and treat you like a lump of dog crap. When they get you down, they still keep kicking you. They can't get blood out of a stone but no one cares about your situation. You tell you story over and over, no one listens, no one cares. You fill out financial statements that clearly shows the welfare you get is hardly enough to live on. You only get harassed more. what can you do, nothing.. You take some more pills, your doctor gave you for depression and stress and curl up in a ball, sleep some more, hoping that when you wake up it will go away!

Some of us can't pay, we'll never be able to pay.. the $$$

BUT

We have paid with our mental health! I for one have served a sentence of over 15 years for the crime of not being able to pay my CSL. A very harsh punishment compared to that for other crimes and no time off for good behavior, no parole!

Some of us are now seniors... Let us retire in peace! Please forgive our loans like you did for countries like Iraq.

Sad.. even the Globe in Mail wants to make a buck on us! Angry

I wasn't expecting the story to get hidden so fast. Not only did they take away the public viewing of the article, they stole the comments that many of us posted on their site.

Unfortunately, I never thought to grabe a copy for future reference..
