This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Make sure this isnt one of those fake notices that collection agency lawyers have been using to scare people.  Maybe going to court would be a good thing.  Telling a judge you offered to pay and they didnt return your calls doesnt exactly work in their favor.

No they didn't. I never heard back from them. I called four different times and was told each time someone from the legal office would contact me in 48 hours. That was a year ago. Today I received a summons from the sheriff's office to pay the full amount or any property I own will be seized.

Honestly, I'm just ready to throw in the towel.

I have an outstanding student loan from 1997.  I initially paid it on a regular basis until I left my husband in 2000 at which time I just did not have the financial means to make regular payments. In 2003 again I started to make payments of $100 a month for one year.

Last year, CRA hired a local lawyer who sent me a financial evaluation which I completed and returned to him. Based on the financial evaluation it was determined that I could not pay at that time and another evaluation would be done in 6 months. In November, again based on the financial evaluation, CRA determined I could pay $100 a month even though my income/expenses have not changed since the six months prior. I paid the $100 for two months. Last month I had to decide between buying oil or paying CRA. I bought oil.

I received a letter on Feb 2 from the lawyer noting that if payment was not made within 10 days they would commence with legal action. Right now I have 62 cents in my bank account. There's no way I can pay this.

Last night in speaking with my boyfriend, he offered to cash in a $5000 GIC to pay this thing off. He said he would do it on the condition that CRA settles for the $5000. Frankly he's sick of watching me throw up everytime I think of this and just wants it gone more than I do. I called CRA today to be told they do not settle student loans. After giving my info to 7 different people I was advised that someone from their legal department would return my call within 48 hours. Meanwhile I'm expecting a summons to appear in court at any moment.

I guess my question is, is it unheard of for CRA to settle a student loan? The loan amount is $9000 and I could give them $5000. Unless they are willing to settle, boyfriend is not going to basically give me every cent of his savings only to have me continue to have to figure out a way to give CRA money every month.

I have a job. I have a good job. I also have a mortgage, car payment (required for the job), and three kids. I'm not taking elaborate vacations or buying new shoes with my paycheck. I'm scraping by to put gas in the car and buy food for the kids. If I'm taken to court and have my wages garnished I'll have to quit my job because I won't be able to afford my car. If I go on assistance at least they'll give me money to feed my kids and pay rent.

Is there anything I can do?
