This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hi,
I have a question related specifically to Global Student Loans Collections. I have one student loan in collections and I had the misfortune of getting these guys.Aside from the multiple usual offences (++ calling, abusive agents, refusing payment(not cashing checks then cashing on mass) etc, I seem to have more problems with them now that I'm paying them, then when I was unemployed. I've been paying my loan for over a year now but I can't seem to get a statement of my account from them. I've requested multiple times. All I get is a letter that says a payment has been made on my account. No amount and no interest rate (which I suppose is better then when they sent me nothing at all). A balance is included but when I've called they've told me the amount is incorrect? My payment and amount doesn't add up and since I can't see what the interest rate is I have no idea whats being credited to my account. They have given me so many stories that I don't believe anything any of them tell me anymore. I believe I'm entitled to a statement of my account but how do I force them to send it to me? I called CIBC (originator of this loan before collections) and told them how I can't get a statement and they told me they would put in a request to global but I'm not all that hopeful at this point. I asked them what I would have to do to get my loan back to CIBC and was told today that its up to Global to make that decision. Now Global's latest gimmick is to send your call to an answering machine and leave your phone number and they will get back to you. I'm not going to leave my new cell number so getting a hold of them has been impossible the last two days. I really could use some advice. If I stop paying them, the only one who gets screwed is me. I could really use some advice.

Write to CIBC Executive Customer Relations department and advise them what you are going through, and have them straighten the collection agency out. Chances are they will pat them on the back and thank them for a job well done by making matters hellish for you, but at least you will get a statement of account.
