This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hello,

I was just wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation and been successful in appealing OSAP (as I have been advised to do by my financial aid office) or have any tips or ideas / suggestions.

Anyways in Sept 2009 I declared bankruptcy on some consumer debt (which was racked up during my undergraduate years in which I did not receive OSAP). I did my grad degree and received OSAP prior to declaring bankruptcy. I was not out of school for many years so all of my debt was erased except my OSAP. I have been discharged from bankruptcy for 1 year now.

My OSAP is in good standing, but I am receiving the Interest relief program.

The reason for my bankruptcy was exceptional familial, as well as health related issues (I know I could show that this circumstance was exceptional and would not happen again). Prior to my bankruptcy all of my debts were in decent standing (I did not miss payments etc), I was just definately Insolvant as all my money was going to paying bills. When I discussed with various finacial planners they advised me at that time bankruptcy was my best option since I was still on social assistance (after giving birth)- as if I started to default on debts I could be sued and then when ready to get back into workforce I could have wages garnished, be unable to be bonded, etc. Therefore I opted to deal with the problem before it got too out of hand.

Anyways I just recently was accepted with scholarship to another graduate program. I do however need some OSAP funding as I am a sole support parent to two children. The application says that if the BIA did not erase my previous OSAP debt I am unable to be eligable for future OSAP funding until my previous loan has been paid off in full.

Also note - I have been very successful in remaining debt free, learned my lesson of living within my means, and only recently received a credit card (to help rebuild my credit) which I just use for gas then pay right off immediately. I assume my credit score isnt too bad given I applied for one and was given the credit card right away - 1000 limit.

Anyways I am doing my appeal and writing my story of exceptional circumstances, and just curious if anyone had any success in getting OSAP again after bankruptcy (even if first OSAP loan was not erased in bankruptcy and is still outstanding)? or if anyone has any reccomendations as to how I should show them that I am at less risk of defaulting this time as I now have NO additional debt, etc...

Thank you
