This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I have been reading the forum but I want some advice on what to do next.

I have a Canada-Saskatchewan Integrated Student Loan, from 2005 & 2006. The balance is approx. $27,000. I had some severe financial hardship and had to file a consumer proposal to clear my other debts but could not wait for the 7 years to be able to include my loan. My CP was filed in 2010 and I was discharged in January 2013.

Unfortunately, my student loan survived and I immediately started receiving phone calls.

I moved from Vancouver, to Guelph since then (in June 2013) and as such have incurred many expenses from moving. I am unemployed and am in financial hardship currently, even going as far a selling possessions to make the rent. I have not even started getting EI yet.

NSLSC will not give me a break. I asked for some of the loan to be forgiven. Nothing. Their response - keep applying for repayment assistance for then next 14 years and then it will go away.

It is my understanding from reading some of these forums that I can apply for Hardship (178 1.1 application) to have student loans forgiven, since I have been discharged from my CP and it has now been 7 years since my student loan. Unfortunately, when I asked my trustee for help with this, they gave me the run around and have no interest in helping.

I just need to know how to get this done! Please help me anyone who knows.

If you are in hardship then simply demonstrate it and ask that they remove it. filing a section 178 is not going to give you any guarantee of a discharge, they can easily oppose it. If you want to learn more About this you can contact Heather at our office and book an appointment. 866-239-7889.

They only say I have to keep applying for assistance every 6 months.

I would like to talk to someone, do you have an office in Guelph?

No. We have 2 offices, Halifax and San Francisco, Ca for American clientelle.  You don't need to visit our office to receive assistance. You can simply call us and if you require services we can provide from the Halifax location.  If you want to inquire about services feel free to call, or write to us using the contact page at www.cfwgroup.ca. That would be much quicker.  We can't provide service though unless you are a client, but we can discuss service details, and whatnot.
Best!
