This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I'm a 3rd year nursing student in ALberta and the government sent me a letter the other day saying I had reached my maximum funding (60K). I'm extremely low income and have been on my own since 18 I've worked so hard in this program and it seems like I've met a roadblock and I can't pass further. I already went to the school advisors this week and told them my situation and they told me to take a year off and work. I already tried that but my faculty won't let me take a leave of absence unless its a family emergency I'll have to drop out of the entire program if I leave for a year to work. Not to mention interest will start on my 60k loan.

I'm not sure what to do I'm already preparing to live out of my car for the summer. I have no money left in savings my tuition is 7.5k a year and I have to pay for living expenses most of my classmates have an amazing support system or live with spouses. I'm just tired of living in poverty and now the government wants to cut me off when I'm 1.5 years from graduating. Honestly, I don't care how much debt I rack up as long as I can get through the next year and a half. My goal is to work up north in underserved communities anyways. Nursing is a passion of mine.

I will admit it was my poor life decisions that led me here. I spent 2.5 years in a degree that I hated and had little to no career prospects. I've found something I love now.

Is there anything I can do? I'm sorry if my words seems jumbled i'm much more coherent but I'm emotional. After working so hard in school it sucks having to go through financial issues.

I think the advice to take a year off given that the nursing faculty won't allow it is bad advice.  Go back to the financial aid office of your program and speak to a different advisor.  Explain that taking a year off is not allowed by your nursing faculty.  Get that in writing and bring it to the financial aid office.  With no student loan funding you should now be eligible for and in high need of any bursaries that you can apply for.

While I don't like to suggest further debt, perhaps visiting a bank to see if you can get a student line of credit might be an option.

It may not be the loan amount but the number of weeks of funding limit that you have reached.

Hope these suggestions help.  Any one else have any ideas?
