This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hi there,

I've gone over quite a few posts and I think it might be better if I get a little advice here before I contact HRSD.

I received OSAP assistance from 2003 to 2007. I never officially graduated then. I resumed my undergraduate studies in 2010, but outside of Canada. I graduated in 2013 and am now doing postgraduate studies (also outside of Canada). I think it's probably in my best interest to repay the loan (correct me if I'm wrong).

I think my debt is around $40 000, although I really don't know the exact amount. I've been living outside of Canada for 5+ years.

Currently, I'm looking to repay my debt but I saw on the forum that some members were being sued. I'm afraid of what will happen when I contact HRSD.

I don't know if being back in school for the past 4 years could help remove some of the interest accrued.

I don't know if HRSD might use scare tactics to push me into making a decision I will regret

I do have some money saved that I could repay part of the debt, but again I'm not sure what would the best course of action would be.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.

If you have money to offer them then they will gladly take it. Just think about it this way: If you all of the sudden show up on their front door step after 5 plus years with no communication or repayment offering they are going to simply assume you have more money than you are offering, for one.  It is the federal government.  If you are able to pay them out without incident then just pay them and be done with it. However, if there is hardship, and you run the risk of having your professional, social, and home-front economic plan harmed then it would be best to have someone who knows their poop to go in there for you and make it all stick.

Just make sure you don't undermine your own cause, that's all.  Government recovery and financial groups care about money and that is it.  They could care less about truth. The amount of tax debt CRA imposes on the population in Canada is ridiculous.  So if they say you owe them money, then you owe them money - even if you really don't. This is not a tax issue but you are dealing with CRA nonetheless.  CRA tAx and non-tAx are just two bedrooms in a very large house.

If you want to appeal for compromise (debt reduction) and have it done by an expert in that field by all means come to our group. We provide that as a service to student loan borrowers.  We can determine what sort of case you have for it, and mediate on your behalf.

If there is a good chance to appeal for a compromise based on my scenario, I would definitely be interested, granted the fee is reasonable.

As I mentioned before, I'm in a postgraduate program outside of Canada, Hong Kong to be precise. The university would definitely have my records for the past 4 years. That is, if being a full-time student would make for a case for debt reduction.

If you think there is a good case, I'm very interested in getting in touch.

A case has to be built, of course.  If there is hardship and any extenuating circumstances involved then you have a case, simple as that.  Right now I can only go by what you are saying here online.  Hardship and any circumstances that support it make the case.

If you want me to assess this you have to contact me. You can do that via Skype, phone, or however you prefer.  To get started submit a request to me here: http://www.cfwgroup.ca/contact-us.html and we will set something up.

Best,
