This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hello! Has anyone here had any experience with the severe disability student loan forgiveness option? I have a severe and life long mental health disability and my therapist would like me to investigate this option. Thank you.

I am also interested in hearing about anyone's experience with disability student loan forgiveness as an option.
After years of dealing with a doctor who does not like to complete forms in a timely fashion, I am feeling completely out of control of my student loan debt. My loan was transferred from NSLSC to HRSDC because it was considered in default when he wouldn't complete the forms in order to qualify for the RAP.
Now HRSDC is after me for repaying the debt as soon as possible, asking for monthly payments of $1,300. I have been receiving disability for over 5 years, and my husband does not work, as he has to help me with daily activities. My prescriptions cost me almost 50% of my 'income', and there is no way that I can afford repayments that high, if any at all.
I have no idea what my options are, or what other people have had experience with. What can they garnish? How can I get repayment assistance through the government collections?
Feeling like I am deeply and completely drowning in this student loan debt. The education that was supposed to give me the career of my dreams, is now giving me nothing more than nightmares!
Please help!

Hello,

Essentially for you to qualify for the permanent disability loan forgiveness you will need to have a doctor fill out some forms. These forms are, in a nutshell, to indicate that you are not able to work for an extended period of time (essentially the rest of your life).

I don't have direct experience with going through this process myself, but have dealt with several people who have, so it will depend on your doctor.

Further, if you have a doctor that is not willing to fill out forms for you in order to assist you, and you do have a permanent disability, I would personally explore the option of finding a new doctor who will assist you.

If your loan is in default having your loan set aside due to hardship with extenuating circumstances is a lot easier. Ids your loan in default or current? If it is current, then Angle's statements are correct. He/she speaks as an agent of NSLSC or Tricura.

If you are disabled, and cannot secure suitable employment, or are weigh5ted by a huge debt that is not going to get paid in this lifetime (or the next to come), then you have to provide a very in-depth demonstration of the circumstances surrounding your issue of inability and disability.

Shuffling doctors is not productive, and you don't need any reputation damage doing that.

Just remember, the NSLSC is a private organization and NOT the government of Canada. It is Davis and Henderson Income Fund who holds this unique monopoly, less Quebec who has their own system in place.

D and H is only interested in making money off the government. Keeping you in debt and "happy about that" makes them money.

Is it really hard to get approved for the severe permanent disability?

Any appeal or request to have a loan taken out due to hardship with extenuating circumstances is complex. You have to give them everything they ask for.
