This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hey there so I currently went to college in 2013 january for a semester and took osap. I have not paid them since this due too only working minimum wage jobs as i planned to go back to school. Now my question was I owed 4000 due too this and as I was doing my taxes I am entitled too a 1200 refund.

My questions would be the following:

When would osap put the lien on my account ?

Has anyone out there gone through this and can tell me how it went and whether or not I will recieve my income tax .
Thankyou any help is helpful!

Hello,

The timeline sounds like it would go as follows: If you stayed in full time studies until April 2013 then your loan would have entered repayment in November 2013. If no payments have been made then 270 days of no payments would have caused the loan to be returned to the government (CRA Non-Tax Collection department) in August or September of 2014. This means that it it likely there would be a lien on your taxes, and that $1200.00 would likely be applied to the loan, in which case you would not receive that tax refund.

You can get that lien lifted by going through the rehabilitation program through the NSLSC, it will require you to pay all outstanding interest owing on your student loan, plus two regular monthly payments.

This is simply one way I know of going about it getting the lien removed, Johnny or others may have other ideas as to how to go about doing this that don't involve contacting the NSLSC, I simply give advice on what I know, and try not to give advice on what I don't know.

But in short, It is likely the lien will already be there, and  it is likely you would not receive your refund.

If you can show the Ontario government that you are in financial crisis and by them taking this refund it puts you are further risk then they will remove all or part. The federal set off program does take these things into consideration. So does the government of Canada.

are you with NSLSC Angel?
