This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

School sent my debt to a collection agency, it's not a governmental debt.
I contacted the school's collection and they've explained that I can either pay the agency or the school!

The questions I have are; how do I find out exactly how much I owe, I'd like to avoid nasty surprises as much as possible and if I settle the debt instead, would this remove the hold on my registration to resume classes. Is it better to pay off one large sump or small payments?

How do I guarantee myself that the debt will be removed from my credit report.
Does this debt affect my chances of ever asking OSAP for a loan; say I request osap for my final year, will OSAP notice the school (even if it's paid off) debt and decline a loan?

If you owe money to a school for in-house financing of tuition, books, etc. then you can call the student services office and they will give you a statement. Easy to do. One phone call. No one can answer if they will hold on your registration after settling out. You have to not only pay the debt, but if you are settling out for less then write your conditions and negotiate that with them.

As for OSAP, unless you are delinquent or in bad standing with the government of Canada or Ontario (or a bank from prior risk-shared years) then this would have no affect.

Is it better to pay out lump sum or make payments (?) That depends on your situation. A debt owed is a debt owed. If you can pay it without any incident causing hardship to you or anyone around you then you should pay it.

I contacted the school and they refused to disclose the statement with me.

If they are refusing to provide you with a statement itemizing what you are being billed for then they have no business demanding payment. This is a clear example of how the system shows it's horrible culture in respect of asset management.

I'm not quite sure what to do next, they have my grades and transcript locked, I want to pay so I can transfer and distance myself from the institution.

Schools often block grades and graduation for non payment of library fines or even on campus parking tickets.   Check with your library to see if there are any outstanding fines.   See if you can work out something with the library if it's them and then see if you can go from there.

The University or school should have some Ombudsperson to help in a complaint like this. Perhaps going higher up the food chain or to your student's association.
