This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hello. I received a statement of claim regarding a defaulted student loan a couple of weeks ago. On the papers it says to contact within 20 days of receipt, which I Have been trying to do but I haven't been able to get a hold of anyone. I've called multiple times with no answer and left messages. I'm trying to see if I can get a payment arrangement set up. Longstory short, I gave up on paying them and dealing with them after a mental health breakdown a few years ago and would like to get everything settled now. What happens if it goes past the 20 days and I can't reach anyone? I'm currently unemployed and start a new job next week and don't want to be surprised with any garnishments.

The statement of claim may not be an actual court document. It may be a piece of paper that is made to look like a court document to try to instill fear.

Check the document carefully.   It is ironic that you are trying to pay and can't get a hold of the people who sent the document! Typical of the student loan broken system.

How long has it been since you made payments? If longer than 6 years your loan might be statute barred.

Thanks for answering. I assumed it was an actual court document since I was served with it and it kind of looks like my husband's divorce papers. It's been about 7 years since I've made a payment aside from the GST and tax refunds the government has been taking since about 2014.

The papers I was served with mention a higher amount than my most recent statement, as well when I was served with them the address they were trying to reach me at is an old one. All of my student loan statements go to my parents address and no one had tried contacting me there.

The papers mention that they are seeking full repayment of about $50K or they will garnish my wages. I'm to have my lawyer contact them to submit a statement of defence or to wrestle payment options by tomorrow. I obviously can't afford a lawyer and have tried very unsuccessfully to reach out to them myself.

Hello,

I recently received a letter telling me to contact federal student loans office or they will serve me with legal papers or garnish my accounts. I just want to know what happened with your situation.

What did you end up doing? Any advice would be appreciated.
