This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hello, i live in B,C and filed a request for communication in writing only, and CBV sent me an email waiver which i am leery about as a section in the waiver states, "I will not in any manner, whatsoever, modify,  copy, distribute, any information contained in any email, unless otherwise permitted by CIBC". My problem with this section is that I am understanding  that if I want to retain a bankruptcy lawyer or a trustee to apply to have my student loans discharged under a previous bankruptcy that i cannot share any information I receive via email?  Does anyone have any feedback or are any of you dealing with a request for communication in writing only? I would just like anything to do with my loans with them to be mailed to my address. Thanks

It;s basically a disclaimer that agencies put in there that makes you think twice about sharing. Probably to protect themselves if one of their employees ever sends you an email with content in it that could get them into serious trouble. With a requirement like this it allows the collectors to be usual collectors with you, make threats, imply threats, and do what they do usually and best

Collection agencies say they cannot communicate with people via email. Yet they do anyway. If you want to have a written contact only, all you have to do is write the letter describing how you want them to communicate with you. Put without prejudice on everything you send in writing. cover your bases.

You should send the letter directly to the one you owe the money to.  CIBC Collection office is on Lawrence in Toronto if I recall. Make it clear what you want and then CIBC has to abide by it. The last thing CIBC or any bank wants is the FCAC breathing down their necks.

Thank you Johnny. I did not respond via email but did fax them a letter today saying that their email was not encypted, and that i want a statement of my accounts, and all communication sent to my home address.  I will take your advice and send off one to CIBC collections as well.  My mistake was filing my notice to them through the consumer protection website instead of printing off the form and sending it to them that way.  That is how they obtained my email address.  What exactly does "Without Prejudice" mean? Thanks again.Smile

Without prejudice means that the document you submit cannot be used in any affidavit or court proceedings. It is part of the wording of documents that protect people in cases of a limitation issue as well.

Thanks Johnny! I finally think i found the correct address for CIBC collections today....i have been getting the runaround for the correct address.  I finally found a decent human being who works for one of the the branches who looked up the address for me....i hope.   The only concern i have is that it is a P.O box so I cannot send by registered mail. I am hunting around for a fax number as well but have had no luck with that so far she said she did not have a fax number listed.

By FCAC do you mean the financial consumer agency of Canada?
