This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I filled for bankruptcy just after finished studying in 2015. I knew the student loan is not dischargeable at that time, but my intention was to find a job and start paying it. The student loan was in good standing at that time. I filled for bankruptcy for several reasons:
  - credit score was already damaged because many years of credit card debt in collection.
  - to get rid of collection letters for this credit card debt. Dealing with collectors wasted much of my time, make feel depressed and unproductive.
  - I was stuck in survival jobs for years, and I knew student loan payments will start soon and I'll not be able to make in the same time payments to this credit card debt.

I didn't know at the moment, and I was not told that :
- I'll lose all the Tax Tuition Education Amounts from CRA, which I believe is not fair, because this credits were related with tuition I paid over the years, and the student loan survived bankruptcy, so why they did erase my tuition credits? I used to receive a good return every year, now I receive almost nothing.
- I will not be eligible for the repayment assistance plan. After the bankruptcy, the student loan was paid in full to the bank and it is now in collection at Collection Department at AFE. They told me, once the loan arrived at them, I am no longer eligible for the Deferred Payment Plan they offer for those with low income.

In meantime, I was not able to find any related job, I am still stuck in survival jobs, I didn't have any full time job in many years, no experience on the labor market and no chance to go back to school. I do make payments at this time to the student loan, but because my income was always under $25.000, I negotiated small payments. Since I didn't have work every month, I missed the payments already a couple of times, so I assume my credit score is still in bad state. In fact, most part or my payments go to interest and very little goes to the principal.

Is there any repayment assistance plan available to make zero payments as long as my income is low ?
It is possible to include the student loan in a former bankruptcy ? I new about the 5-years option to present my case in front of a court, but I heard is quite expensive and not very simple.
It is possible to cancel de bankruptcy and fill again when the 7 years mark ? How realistically it is a second bankruptcy ?

Thanks for any answers and suggestions.
