This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hey guys. After a long slog I managed to pay off my Federal student loan through last year's Income tax return, they even sent me the remaining $32 left on my return.

My question is, after not hearing from the province about their portion of the loan owed in about 10 years , never being asked for money whatsoever, what are the chances that the government takes my tax return to pay the provincial portion, even after issuing me a small refund last year after the federal portion was paid?

Thanks for any advice.

I should add that I have no contact with anyone regarding the Provincial portion of the loan in at least 10 years and have not been threatened with action regarding the provincial portion, only the Federal portion which has since been paid/

f the provincial government you owe has an active recovery file then they can flag it and off-set. It's in the federal rule book that applies to set-off to the provincial portions of student loans.

Can I safely call the CRA and ask if there is a lien for offset? they have not taken any taxes for the provincial portion nor gst as of yet, and never made any real effort to collect in about 10 years.

That is entirely up to you. I can't say it is safe as it applies to whether or not you will stir something up. If you want to know something you have to call and find out. That is the reality of the situation. All I can do is inform you of the risks in doing one thing or another unless you are a client of ours.

The general rule is that this is a Canada student Loans Program issue and those who are involved in the lending process do communicate with one another. So, it is a "do at your own risk" type of matter.

I would do it for you but you must be client and there is a cost for our time in doing these things. We minimize risk by ensuring that all is done in good faith and that expectations are are set and managed with them.

That's good! If you owe provincial and they have right to hammer a set-off requirement to pay then they can at any time. That's all you need to think about really. So, if there is no right for them to, then they cannot.

Thanks, it was a big relief this year. I may be contacting you in the future, to inquire about the status of the debt as my financial situation has improved slightly however, for now it's just a relief to get a bit of money.

Yes I can imagine. If you want the GENERAL limitation examination done on your federal (Canada) student loan over at www.solvestudentdebt.com it is not expensive. $230.00 is the average cost, including tax and people dig that. If/when you want that done just go to the free assessment on the site and send away. Make sure you state on it that you want a limitation examination of your federal loan.

Take your time and absorb it all. Holler when you ae ready!

Sadly this is the provincial portion (ontario), I have never made a payment in the  12 years, the Federal portion is paid off. It only started at like 3k so I might just try and pay it off if it hasn't been miraculously forgiven
