This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I did a IT course and got a $25,000 loan from the Bank of Montreal to do it. After I finished the course, I moved to Toronto to find work. I lost two jobs because I am an honest (and I guess stupid) person in that I talked about my disability before getting an offer to be hired. My disability is not severe and when asked what adversity I have overcome in my life, I try to show how having a disibilty has made me a better person. One day a friend suggested I apply to the Bank of Montreal and tell them I have a disibility because they were looking to hire people from minorities. I applied and got a call the next day. My contact at BMO set up a number of interviews for me but nothing worked out. Then one day she called me in to discuss an opportunity that looked perfect for me. They had an opening for a project analyst that would be trained to become a project manager. The only problem was that it wouldn't be starting for a month and she wanted to know if I would be willing to go on a Government sponsored project for only one month so that we could get an idea if I was a good fit for the job and she assured me that after the month was over, as long as everything worked out, I would be hired for the position. For the trial month, I would only get a little more than minimum wage. I figured why not? Two weeks into the month, I went to my boss and told her that I didn't think she was giving me enough to do to really get an idea of whether I would be good for the job and there was only two weeks left. She looked at me real confused and asked what I was talking about. I told her I was told this was a one month trial and she said she was told I would be doing it for six months. When I went back to my contact, she denied ever telling me it was only for one month. Now I admit I was naive but that still does not excuse what she did and I had no desire to work for them for six months at little more than minimum wage. I put in a complaint against her and she lied to her boss right in front of me. I complained to Human Rights and they told me I had no case because I wasn't denied a service.

What I found out later was that the bank had a deal with the government to offer this program and if they didn't get enough people signed up every year, they would lose the program. So I was lied to and taken advantage of to help BMO fill a quota.

I figure they wanted to hire me for six months and let's say a good starting salary is $40,000 per year. I have degrees in mathematics, psychology, education and an IT diploma so I think that is a fair starting salary. That would be $20,000 for six months. I still owe $20,000 on my loan to them and they can't understand why I don't want to pay it back.

If you have some proof of the lie about your contract the forum for this complaint would be the labour board, not human rights. . .

No, I don't have any proof. I had no reason to believe she would lie to me but it was just naive to believe that. I made a mistake and I paid for it.

At the same time, I do believe that the bank should pay too. now that I am not working and can't afford to pay much, I use everything I have to pay other bills and this is making them so mad. iven what the bank did, they will just have to realize they are my lowest priority and I believe I am justified in doing that.
