This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Casey, I apologize sincerely if my post re:
counselling/meds offended you. I only meant to
suggest that they can help. It was never my intention
to imply that you need to do that or you should do
that.

amy, i think casey knows you didnt mean anything by it.

counselling and meds CAN help, but not everyone takes drugs well ( me included).  and living in a rural area doesn't always make counselling a viable option.  like casey, i know where my stress comes from and i can manage it on my own.  i might get cranky sometimes but it beats the antidepressants i was on ( vey briefly) that really made me a different person.

Admittedly meds aren't for everyone, but anti-depressants have saved people. You have to go with your personal reactions.

In my case, self prescription worked extremely well for a while. Being a junky just didn't work out in the long run, though.

Kinda miss the rush, though....

Speaking only for myself, I have to say that anti-
depressant meds have literally saved my life.
Putting up with the side effects is worth it to me as
when they reach the right dosage level I have at least
felt (somewhat) 'normal'. I don't like having to rely on
taking a pill and it's not the only solution for dealing
with depression/stress but I will take it in conjunction
with therapy while trying to work through things.

I hope I'm not reposting this. (Network Problem)

Lasergirl's right. Don't dismiss any reasonable therapy. I know a great number of people who certainly would not have survived without anti-depressants.

Is it as good as a life without suffering externally imposed indignities and having a naturally occuring perfect seratonin balance? Hell no.

But it beats a warm bath, a bottle of Scotch and open veins.

Hey if therapy and antidepressants help you, then go for it.

Other persons rely on other things to ease their pain and suffering.

A friend of mine who I met at University, developed diabetes and was not able to complete his degree. The collectors hounded and hounded him. They called him day and night. It was so sad, he was so upset, the stress the collectors caused him was total bullsh*t.
He did the best that he could. Due to his illness, he had to turn to social assistance, and the **** still wanted money.
Well, sadly, the collectors can't harass him anymore. He passed away on August 10/04.

Another of my best friends (who I had a relationship with for 7 years) and who attended a technical school, but was only able to find temporary work, or contract jobs, turned to drinking. His drinking problem ended up killing him. He fell down 20 steps and broke his neck.
He passed away August 26/04.

If I have to attend one more funeral this week, I am going to really to consider giving up. People who try so hard in life to become someone or something, just end up failing or dying.
Sorry for being so negative, but I am not feeling particulary happy today. So I will now leave this board today.

Thanks for asking and caring.

I had taken a couple weeks off work to recuperate from the major stress and burdens in my life.
My employer said to book it off as a holiday and I will still get paid for it.... Hell, it was no holiday.

With the boyfriend having a heart attack amongst his other health problems, and me having to be the only breadwinner in the family (due to his benefits running out) and the stress of having to attend 2 funerals of persons that I really loved and cared for who passed away many years too young, the stress toll on me has just been two much.

I have been feeling like the walls are closing in, couldn't eat or sleep, not to mention having a headache that lasted for 5 days. (But hey, after getting some cheap drugs from the doc, (no...not prozac) I think I will make it).

I just have to let things not bother me so much. I know that I am doing the best that I can, and what more can I do. I have to accept that. And if I can't pay all the bills on time, so be it, I keep telling myself at least I am alive.

But hey, I am ok. The time off did me wonders.
And as long as I am alive, I will kick butt!!!

I'd also like to thank you Hunter on all the people that you've helped over the months on this forum. What goes around comes around and you deserve alot. You've helped alot of people here and we hope we can help you back some how.

Take good care of your self, and remember this too will pass. Have you thought about writing a book? At the very least do some journalling... that can help.

One of the most important predictors of overcoming things is not the thing changing, but having hope... and gratitude for what you do have!

Glad you share in this forum. Keep your chin up, and remember there is always support here for you!
