This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I have received the approval letter for the CSL Debt Reduction.

I still have not heard anything about the OSL debt reduction.  Nor have I called to inquire since I last post.

If anyone have news on whether the banks have received guidelines to process Ontario Debt Reductiont, please post. Thanks.

Hi,

My day was going bad to worse.  Worse was when I called for the status of my Ontario Debt Reduction application.

I just got off with CSR regarding my Ontario Debt Reduction application which I sent in Nov. '04.

I asked for the status of my Ontarion Debt Reduction application, and she starts in on my Federal Debt Reduction. WTF!

Then she goes on about how my monthly payment was reduced from *** to *** because I had to make 10 consecutive payments.  I said "What?  Can you go over this again, I'll get a pen to write this down."  She said it was reduced because I had to make 10 consecutive payments.  I said that's my CSL Debt Reduction, I already got it approved and reduced.  I'm asking about my Ontario Debt Reduction in Repayment application.

She asked if I was aware of the change in amount of monthly payment for the CSL and if I was sent a lettter.  I said Yes.   That's another thing, I told her, my interest only payments was supposed to  end in 1-2 months and then my revised CSL monthly payment (after debt reduction) was supposed to start later @ ***.  But it was changed and I had to pay 2 months earlier than planned.

I'm gluing the information together and now see that I think what they did was raised my monthly CSL payments to a higher amount so I could qualify for the next Federal Debt Reduction in Repayment.

I called for status of my Ontario Debt Reduction application and was told by a CSR my application was rejected.  I asked why and she said it was rejected because it was missing proof of income document.  She said I was supposed to send this in by Dec. 28, 2004.  I told her I never knew about this.  She asked if I got the new application form, I asked "What form?"  No, I didn't get any new Ontario Debt Reduction in Repayment form.

This is my raction to the news - .  I told her the last time I called in for status of my Ontario Debt Reduction was on Dec. 20, 2004 and I was told the government has not sent the bank the guidelines yet.

She said she'll transfer this information and have a specialist call me back in 2 business days.

Now that I'm off the phone with her, and check my record.  Turns out I made a mistake when I said to her last I called on Dec. 20, 2004 I was told the govt. had not sent the guidelines to the bank yet.

It was Dec. 10, 2004 when I was told govt. has not received guidelines from the bank.  Still, this is only a 10 days gap.

On Dec. 20, 2004, I did call in (as her system confirmed), and it was confirmed by a CSR I received my federal debt reduction.  When I inquired about Ontario Debt Reduction status, he said he doesn't see anything regarding the status of my acct.  He was about to transfer me to the person in charge, but I said "No, that's okay."  The reason I didn't want to was I was thinking "After all, I had only called to bother this person in charge 10 days ago."

Now to be told I was called about a missing documentation which I was supposed to send in before Dec. 28, 2004?  I don't understand what is going on.

I don't even know if I qualify to apply for this Debt Reduction in Repayment.  I was not presceened for the form, I simply mailed it in and let them determine it.

Now, to complicate matter is the fact I'm currently attending a HRSDC training program.  How is this going to affect the Ontario Debt Reduction in Repayment application if I was to start the application all over again.

Previously I was told when I inquired about a second Federal Debt Reduction that it would not affect it because I'm no longer considered a student once I apply and get approved for their debt reduction, so the second one would not be affected by my going back to school because the first one has to be at least 12 months from the first and it'll rely on the date of the first application.

Right beside the application signature of the Ontario Debt Reduction application section it states: "This date must be at least 60 months from your last study end date."  I can't restart this application because now I'm in an HRSDC funded training program.

It's all so confusing.

I'll know more when they call me and ask what I can do about the form.  If sending in the required info. is not too late.  But it looks like it is.

If anyone has any clue about what the last study end date they are using I would like to hear it.  Thanks.

Edit: reduced from *** to *** = reduced to *** to *** but they had to increase it to ***.

Nevermind this section anyway because I'm all confused about the amount while I was on the phone with her.  And my mind is still reeling.  Also, I don't want to divulge how much I owe so it's difficult to string together a coherent sentence when I'm actually quite incoherent right now.

Your last statement was funny.  Thank you. That made my day

The program is designed to confuse people. It seems like they have dedicated the most time developing ways to decline people of any support assistance - or at least confuse them to the point where they throw their hands up in the air and say "ta hell wit it" (putting it mildly).

Hi,

I've reviewed my debt reduction approval letter today so I can make my point to the specialist who's going to call me today.  Well, turns out I was wrong about the date.  Due to the reduction, they changed the date of payment to Jan. and they did state the date the new revised amount was to start.

I had overlooked this.  The reason was I had arranged for interest only payments with them for my OSL and CSL.  I had thought this arrangement would not end until the date agreed which was Feb. '05, and the regular payment sef for Mar. '05.

Now that I look at the form, yes they did notify me the date for the revised amount is set to start on Jan. '05.

Still, why does the revised amount (due to the reduction) overide the original agreement of the "interest only" payments.  And why did they not warn me of this?

I'm waiting for the specialist to call.

Update:

9:18 P.M.

Nothing.  No call from this specialist.

Well, I didn't get any call on the agreed upon time of calling anyway.  From the call I.D., I got a call at 11:51 A.M.  If it's them, it certainly was not the agreed upon time. I said 2-8 PM, then changed it to 3-8 PM because I might not be home by 2 PM.  I got home and waited from 1PM - 8PM, and still waiting.

Maybe they'll call tomorrow.  She did say 1-2 business days.

I don't think there's much hope with this Ontario Debt Reduction, at least not for me anyways. Who can sort through all this stuff they expect you to go through? Hell man, I still have to get a job to pay this sh*t back.  How the helll can I think with all this stress and burden of the loan hanging over my head for more than 5 years.

Anyone who has ever received interest relief will tell you it is not an easy process.  All kind of weird things happen with this nice little program supposedly to help the unfortunate students.  But how many really get this help and of those who do how much effort they had to put in in order to get this help?

I would say the last 3 years of my life was devoted to interest relief applications.  Laugh, but it's true.  It takes like 2-3 months for 1 to go through.  You get prescreened, wait for form, then get your calls about missing informatio, then waiting wondering if it will get approved because if it doesn't you are in default.  God only knows how much time I have devoted to this sh*t.  You can only borrow from your family for so long.  It's not like you could leech off them forever.  Borrowing money from them and not paying interest on it takes a toll on them too.  OMG, I don't even own anything worthwhile.  I don't have a house nor a car nor any savings.  All I have is this stupid debt.

You know, if I don't get the Ontario Debt Reduction, it's okay with me.  But if I qualified and didn't get it then I would be ticked off.  If I qualify but now have to wait 5 years in order to reappy.  But then I won't need it - the loan would be too small to qualify.  And in a worse case scenario in default.

Then I'll yell out but it's not my fault it's in default. J/K

I'll wait again tomorrow.

End of rant for the day.    Will be back if I can.  Don't thin I can stand it any longer.  No, I'm not going to jump off the roof.  I just mean I don't know if I can continue to log this sh*t I'm going through anymore.  But sometimes I wonder and believe the govt. want us all to jump.  What the hell were they thinking when they made up these programs to help us when very few of us who need it really get it?  I think only a lawyer can understand all this legal mumble jumble.  I wish I could afford a lawyer but if I have that kind of money then I wouldn't need debt reduction.  It's a no-win situation.

No call for today either, so the call yesterday was from then.  I've had it.  I'm not going to call them back either.  I was told to wait and then I get no call at the time arranged.

Good luck for all of you who try for these programs.  It's there for you if you qualify but you'll have to fight every step of the way to get it.

Thanks for your words of encouragement.  It feels like I'm just typing all this for nothing and it's not doing anybody or me any good.   I have to devote my time to looking for a job.

If I have any further news, I'll post more.  But that's it for good because I won't be calling them about this anymore.  Well, at least the CSL debt reduction was approved and it helped me out quite a bit.
I was going to ask for my second "interest only" payments to start this month, or perhaps call for it next month.  But after the news of the Ontario Debt Reduction Application, I just didn't bother to ask.  I will most likely have to call in May or June for it unless something turns up (like a job).

When you are feeling strong and confident...give them a call...about the reduction...bug, bug, bug until you get the answers you need and want.  Tell them you waited and waited and followed through on your end...

Don't give up....you are worth it!!!
