This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

My 20 year old nephew has been in computer classes at the local university for the past two years. He has been working two jobs as well as having taken out a student loan. Apparently, he has been under pressure from family and friends to excell because without university, you are told that you will get nowhere.

I know he had been struggling to work two jobs, excell at school and try have a social life or something like it. I have tried to help him when I could, he loved our little pep talks.

Well he calls me up on Friday, and he is crying, and that he has checked himself into a drug rehab program in another city. I am devastated. Why, because I did not see it coming. I did not see the signs. He used to tell me everything, but he said he was scared to admit that he failed.

He said he had been popping pills to keep him awake so he could do it all, work and go to school, and maintain high grades, but he said he could not do it all. And that everything caught up to him.

He said if he does not work, then he will have to take out more student loans, and he did not want to, so he tried to work every shift he could. And that somedays he would only get 3 hours sleep,so he took pills to try stay awake.

I am feeling so helpless. And mad, that I did not see it coming, did not try help him more. Now he is addicted to drugs.

Geez, all he wanted was an education to get a better job, and now he has a drug problem because of it. There is enough pressures in life, without everyone telling you to go to University and get that worthless piece of paper.

Now he is in a treatment center for 6 weeks, it is so far away from here, and worse yet he can't come home for Christmas or have visits or phone calls. We can only talk to his counsellors. This is going to be a tough Christmas without him.

But I am really proud of him, to admit that he had a problem and to get help for it.

he is lucky to have family he can count on - he will neeed you more than ever once he gets released.  be thankful he was intelligent enough to recognize he was in over his head, strong enough to admit his problem and brave enough to seek help.  this shows what a remarkable young man he is.this may put a damper on your holidays but it gives the family something to look forward to at new years - a new start for your nephew.  sending all the positive energy i can muster, think postive hang in there !

Thanks for the support.
I was really looking forward to Christmas, but I feel less happy about my nephew not being there.
But as my boyfriend says better he gets help now, than to have an overdose and not be here at all.
That is comforting.

Thanks for your thoughts
I am going to need all I can get.
