This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I'm in New Brunswick and I've gotten notice that the National Student Loan Service Centre will be taking over my New Brunswick loan.

I'm on of the lucky ones that have a Federal loan with both CIBC and the NSLSC, as well as a NB loan with CIBC (now the NSLSC) and I'm only interest only payments with CIBC.

Well today I receive a check in the mail from CIBC in the amount of my April monthly payment.  So, I call them, very confused, as I have yet to receive any info on how/when to start paying the NB portion of my student loan to the NSLSC.  Keep in mind that I have just made May's payment to CIBC as well (and for my husband too).,

CIBC tells me that they have handed my NB loan over to the NSLSC as of May 1st and that I will receive a check in the may for the payment I made for May too.

So I call the NSLSC.  They're just *dumb founded* that I haven't received the payment info because they (of course) sent it out weeks ago.  I haven't moved in 2 years!!  So they will send out a new agreement.  Apparently I have to sign a new consolidation agreement and I will have a new monthly payment amount and, here's the kicker, they do not do interest only payments so I'm stuck paying the full amount.

Where's the justice here?  I had an agreement with CIBC to make interest only payments until the end of July and this is what I was budgeting for.  Now CIBC has sent my loan to the NSLSC and they don't have a clue of what they are doing 90% of the time.  I hate that they can just do this without consent.

It really is a big deal to me.  Now I have to run around and fax the NSLSC consent letters to debit May's payment (which I have just made to CIBC!!) by tomorrow, for myself and my husband.  And, I'm just going on what the student loan rep is telling me.

Don't they have a clue that this is our hard earned money they are just throwing around??? We pay just over $1000.00 per month in student loans and you would think that would be bad enough.  We don't have great jobs and we don't make huge amounts of money.  We are just getting by!

Anyway, sorry for the vent.  Maybe some of you are dealing with this as well?  Any helpful hints would be much appreciated!!
