This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

What would be your reaction if the system implemented the following?

The government(s) should automatically grant people   TOTAL REMISSION who are: suffering from permanent disability (Pre or post dating studies), who have not been able to secure suitable employment within 3 years after completed studies, and can demonstrate that he or she will not be able to repay the debt in the near or distant future.

To safeguard the system from any potential abuse, the government(s) can assess the remissed borrower from time to time in an effort to ensure that the integrity and mission of the "new" program is not compromised. If the disabled borrower secures gainful employment after the fact, and is able to contribute back to the student loans program, then it is only fair that the borrower do so. The amount of repayment MUST be income contingent *********************.

Just because someone is working doesn't mean they can afford to repay. The costs of living are yet one of the largest problems that limit one's ability to repay on demand.

sounds like a terrific idea to me.  the current stipulation of having to have your disability occur within six months of completion of studies is utterly ludicrous. many illnessed go undiagnosed for years, and the current set up leavves victims of automobile accidents etc to the compassion of the system ( which doesnt work very well).

the notion of an income contingent repayment plan is a great one that has been bandied about, implemented in la belle province i believe last year.

also, something else that would be a nice idea and would benefit many is the notion of volunteering for various agencies ( ie red cross, food shelter, literacy programs. hospitals, park services, etc) and haveing your loan reduced as compensation for yorr time while you are unable to find a job.  the upside is the volunteer hours can be added to your resume and you actually feel good about making a contribution to society on some sclae, instead of feeling helpless and frustrated at not being able to repay your loans....

professionals built the titanic but amateurs built the ark...

yep

both are good ideas

But doesnt solve the problem for me

Schools, csl and provinical student loans shouldnt be accessible for people like me who have a criminal record and no chance to gain employment and pay their loans within 10 years

Also,

I assume the disability would have to be physical or mental ?

A criminal record is a serious barrier to employment
