This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

For those HRDC and Edulinx people who come to this site, please be aware that this is not a site to help people avoid their loans!
Just so there is no confusion, the policy of this site (as stated on the main page) is that loans should be repaid if you have the resources, but help should be provided for those who can't. Administrators should provide a higher level of service!

The current level of service is unacceptable!
The regulations are all screwed up!
The interest relief program is ineffective. People who need help do not qualifying,
Collectors regularly break the rules.

Here's a summary of the problems, with the newspaper articles to prove them. Follow this link to find out how you are really doing at your job! http://www.canadastudentdebt.ca/commonproblems.asp

Summary of Problems:

People who need help do not qualify for interest relief or debt reduction. A person with over 60,000 in student loans would be disqualified from interest relief if their gross income is $33,000 per year, even though that would be a 50% debt ratio! With 25,000 in student loans, you’d be disqualified at $24,000 per year!

Edulinx and the Banks lose interest relief and continuation of enrollment forms resulting in defaults and destroyed credit ratings and harassment

Because of all the program changes, students graduate with up to 6 different loans each managed by a different organization.

Collection agencies refuse to accept payments and illegally harass clients and their family.

People who want to pay their loans cant because HRDC doesn’t know who has the loan.

Edulinx and HRDC staff give wrong answers.

Student loa n l egislation is complicated. Staff don't know or understand the regulations.

There is no way you can find out how much you owe. If you think you've paid off your loan, you may be surprised to find that 5 years later, they call you and tell you there was another portion that was not paid and you owe it and all the outstanding interest and your credit rating has been ruined.

Presently, Ph.D. students run out of interest free weeks and have to pay back their undergrad loans while they are still a full-student (The banks will not longer accept confirmation of enrollment forms). Essentially the Government of Canada forces Ph.D. students to quit school to pay back their loans before they get the chance to finish their studies. This means if you get undergraduate student loans you can not obtain a Ph.D.

Graduates are leaving the country because of overwhelming debt, creating a brain drain!

If a disability occurs more than 7 months after you finish school, no help is available!

Because of the changes to the bankruptcy act, people are avoiding further education in order to avoid restarting the clock.

YOU HAVE BIG PROBLEMS WITH YOUR STUDENT LOAN PROGRAM! Please, please fix these problems!
