This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Can someone tell me if the Interest Relief form for my Canada Student Loan is available onlnie?

Current relief is coming due and need to reapply. My BC loan is still waiting for approval, Aug 31 and have to apply for that again as well.

Useless student loan departments. My BC took so long, collections took over so I used my last bit of savings to get it out and put another payment in as well. All while not being able to secure employment in last 12 months, no income.

My personal advice is do not go back to school to better yourself you only end up in 100x more debt and no job. Diplomas are not worth anymore than the paper they are written on.

Our government has a good scam going by promoting self-worth and education. Our country revolves around the unemployment percentage that is controlled by an unstantiated claims of job growth.

Sorry for the rant , I'm just frustrated. I know theres light at the end of the tunnel, sometimes a blanket covers it.

Hi Shasta,

So far as I know, the Canada Interest Relief application is NOT available online and I've spent a lot of time searching through the websites trying to find the Canada IR table.  It was well hidden....but no, I didn't see any application.  Myself, I just call and ask them to send me one and they do that right away.  No problems.  I usually get a letter first, warning me that my IR is coming to an end and that I need to reapply.  You can find the general info here: (you've probably found this site)

http://www.canlearn.ca/NSLSC/support/new/nlwhanew19.cfm?lang nslsc=en#New

and the Canada IR table is found here:

http://gazetteducanada.gc.ca/partII/2005/20050601/html/sor15 2-e.html

It does seem like a scam doesn't it....I still believe that education is never a wasted thing, but I don't think that it should be so costly, or that so many should have to suffer.  Even when you finally do get a job - there they are with their hands out.  Good luck to you and let us know how it goes....
