This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hi Mark,

I am just wondering if you are personally footing the bill for this excellent site that helps us all.  If so this does not seem fair that we are benefiting and you are paying.

Could we be contributing something?  I think at one point there was a paypal donate now button.  Could this donate now button come back?

Are there other options for paying for this site in the long term?  eg a grant from some sort of organization or the CFS?  or CASA?

Thanks for all your efforts in creating and maintaining this site

The site costs me about $300 a year to run... mainly because it needs an MS-SQL database because of the size of the forums and number of posts and members... Software investment has been a one time cost of $200...

I advertise my book on here, so I consider it an investment... and I'm happy to pay for and run this site...

If you want to help, the best way you could do that is to check out my book The Feeling Soul at Chapters or ask your local library to purchase a copy....

The thanks I get for running the site are far more rewarding than the costs!

thanks for your offer though...

Sometimes crap happens but its how we deal with it..... I went through absolute crap with my loans but something good came of it...

Thanks for the thank you...

Of course, if anyone out there on this site wins the lottery and wants to pay off my outstanding student loan of about 30G I of course wouldnt complain ;)

I've had about 50 Grand in medical bills in the last 7 years because I helped somebody move. We lifted a heavy trunk of books but they dropped their end... I was at the back end of the trunk and got a very nasty whiplash injury that has taken 7 years to heal... but its much better now... (thanks to Chinese medicine, treatment and accupuncture) so now I'm just getting back on my feet.

Instead of being angry and focussing on the negatvie I remind myself that a positive thing came out of it all.

I'm glad this site has been helpful to people!
