This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I hope I am posting this in the right forum,  my apologies if its misplaced.

I am a married father who in 2001 went back to school to try and better my family's situation in life.  Due to some rapid health changes I had to stop working in 2005 to look after my wife and son.  Some background follows,  my wife was diagnosed with MS in 2000 and has since had a fairly quick progression of the disease she lost alot of the use of her left arm in 2005 which necessitated my leaving work as she no longer able to administer our son's insulin and now she faces the necessity of using a whellchair or power scooter just to get around the house.  My now 9 year old son was diagnosed with Diabetes in 2001 and in 2005 starting having unusual happenings with his blood and to date (3 years later) they stil have no idea what's wrong with him.   He had a stroke and brain Hemmorage (sp?) in 2006 that left him almost comatose for several days.  He spent the last 4 months of 2007 at the local Children's hospital where he underwent 10 biopsies and 3 lumbar punctures. Currently, I have defaulted on both federal and provincial student loans and am repaying them back slowly ( The provincial Government forgave the accumulated interest and made my loan interest free for its lifetime) the federal government is not so nice.  I guess my question is this: Are there any programs available to me to help reduce my federal loan debt ?  At my current rate of repayment its going to take another 15 years to repay the loan in its entirety and I'll probably have repaid more than double what I borrowed.

With regards to my son's health problems there is no end in sight and I am unclear as to if I will ever be able to return to the workforce.  Also, I forgot we have been on assistance since my son was diagnosed with Diabetes because I had no health coverage with my then employer and the supply costs ate through any savings we had managed to accumulate quickly.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
