This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hi my story is pretty typical and boring
Graduated from Uni in 2002, loan is split up (atleast) 3 ways with scotiabank, BC and CSL. After some rough patches I've resolved things with BC and CSL to the point where I've been making payments for over 5 years that I can afford etc.
I owe 15G to scotiabank, I know I do, I have known about it. A credit counsellor in 2004 told me that if it isnt appearing on my credit report, then don't worry about it, don't say anything, just leave it alone and hope it dies. That was the plan until.....
last week Contact Resource Service Agent Michael Margate calls me to tell me the full balance (now 25,000) is being recalled, I'm going to have to borrow the money, he can get me a deal etc. etc.
I said I'd look into it, the next day Agent Adam Burley calls (are these real names they give me?) and shouts at me for ages. I offer him installments monthly payments and he says NO, I don't get too creeped out until he starts telling me about my credit history, which he knows all about!
He knows where I work (I never told him) as well as other details of my recent bank history etc!
I tell him I'll get back to him and he lets me off the phone but they have been calling back everyday. The messages are very foreboding.
I guess I need some advice, do I just avoid them? It seems wrong.
Do I want to do bankruptcy? My other loans are in decent standing and my bank and I have an ok relationship (no mortgage but they have given me loans and overdraft a credit card etc)
I think I am terrified of CRS!!!

I'm so happy to find this site!
I'm dealing with something similar. 1999 was the last year I took out a student loan from Scotiabank. Since then my student loans have been split between CSL and BCSL(currently managable payments). In 2001/2002 I was off school (new baby), and being on low income I applied for interest free status with the gov't. While I waited to be processed, Scotiabank took me to collections (3 month deadline..?) with no warning at all. I have since not been able to reverse this, even though I was promised it will be reversed if I return to school FT, which I did - to graduate in June 2003. I have not paid anything towards this debt for at least 7 years. I have recently received a letter from a collections agency, saying that I need to repay $15000.00 within 10 days of receipt of this letter, or I will be sued. Wow! What a shocker, since as a single parent I'm just scraping by, and I have no surplus cash or disposable assets. 3 years ago I barely survived an accident, and my employment options are now limited, propobly for life. I e-mailed the agency saying just that, presenting a chance of a tiny cheque (no set amount) sent to them monthly, until my situation improves. I asked what to make the cheque out to, and I requested online or via mail communication only. 1 week and no response yet.
I wonder if:
- I made a mistake in contacting them (6 year statute of limitations), even though I
  haven't sent a cheque yet?
- Can they really take me to court, and if yes - how? (claim served in person or via
  registered mail?)
- I'm desperate, and even considering bankrupcy next year (7years), if my situation
doesn't improve. Can any resulting court action make my Scotia debt not released by
order of discharge (The Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, Section 178 (1) (a)) What exactly is
a fine, penalty.etc, this part is very unclear and scary
- Finally, in the event of bankruptcy, would the student loan interest debt be released by
order of discharge (The Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, Section 178 (1) (h)), as this is also
  very unclear.
I have not been able to find good, unbiased advice, and I can't afford a lawyer. I'm scared to make my next move, as I don't want to make a mistake. I would greatly appreciate answers to some, or all of my questions.
