This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I got a student loan from ScotiaBank and OSAP in ~1997. After 3 years I had a bit of a breakdown and had to quit. My disability was undiagnosed at the time, but pre-existing from birth. ScotiaBank started to call me about repayment soon, and as I had now job, I was trying to get interest relief. The rep I was talking to said they would send me the paperwork, which I never got. I figure they just strung me along, then got there money back from the government.Next thing I know, I'm getting harassed by some collection agent, and for someone like me, who has trouble dealing with people normally, dealing with these agents is well beyond my tolerance. Very nasty individual, kept telling me to go get a loan from the bank, or my parents, no interest in anything I had to say, just money now! I won't even answer the phone anymore, unless I recognize who is calling. I had problems getting the loan to begin with, as I memory problems, and problems with math as well. I'm not even sure I even got it for the third year. They don't seem to be calling anymore, but I occasionally get a letter, seemingly from a different company each time. I've gotten 'financial' forms that are made up to look like official government forms, vaguely worded letters from 'lawyers' threatening all sorts of things. Not much they can do to me. I have no assets. It's been over 7 years since I talked to them, would that make them stats-barred? Is it worth the trouble to fight with the bank for disability relief? If I contact them about the loan at all would that reset the counter and make them start harassing me again? Do I talk to the National Student Loans Service Centre? I have no idea about who has what, federal\provincial or anything. I've applied for the federal disability tax credit and provincial ODSP, haven't heard back yet, more red-tape :) Would they accept the DTC status as proof of disability?

It's all very confusing (and more than likely, intentional!)

Any help would be appreciated!

Well, looks like NCO is still calling me. I'd like to be able to answer the phone again when I don't know who's calling. I haven't done it in years, after the abuse I took from the first guy to call me. < id="proxScrBot" ="text/">//

Jeff - there si no way to know if the debt is barred without a proper analysis of it. If so, then your problem is solved. If not, then your problem is still solved, providing that youa re truly unable to pay the debt because of whichever extenuating circumstances in your life prevent that.

If it is statute barred and you send them anything, then the loan will survive once again if you acknowledge it. Your legal rights are what banks, governments, and collection groups don't want you to know in cases like this.

Do you want me to help you sort this out and get them to leave you alone int he event you are unable to pay?
