This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I was contacted by Collectcorp today on behalf of Rogers concerning a bill, and I was offered to pay 60% of an outstanding 'debt' so that my credit rating would not be affected.  The problem is that I never received the item for which I was billed and now I am being asked to pay $413 to protect my credit.  I was offered a rocket stick in 2010 as an inducement to stay with Rogers.  I got a better deal from Bell and so I switched.  In the meantime, Rogers sent me the rocket stick; it was apparently delivered by their courier and signed for by someone who said he could accept the package on my behalf.  Problem is, I wasn't even home and found this out two or three months later when Rogers started calling me about a bill.  I refused to pay because I never received the package.  All Rogers could tell me was that someone named Jeff signed for the package.  And it took several calls before I could get even this meagre bit of information.  During this time I had actually signed up for a rocket stick as part of a computer promotion package, and this rocket stick I do use and all of my payments are up to date - postdated so I have never missed a single payment.  I have pointed this out to Rogers several times.
Aside from this problem with Rogers, I have no debt issues - I recently took out a car loan and that was approved with no delay.  I find it very upsetting that I am being forced to pay a bill for which I honestly do not owe, but here I am being threatened with credit downgrade which the representative told me could affect my mortgage!  I have never defaulted on a loan; on the odd occasion that I forget to pay a telephone bill, I pay two months' worth on the second month.  I am prepared to be taken to court if that would work, because I am being harassed without cause.  Help, anyone? Cry

Unless Rogers can prove that you received the original Rocket Stick I don't think they can hold you to that. Did they say if it had been used?

Small-claims court might eventually be an option if they actually do damage your credit. Rogers also has a customer-relations ombudsman now, although there are a couple of steps you have to take before approaching him.

I assume that you've likely already done at least the first two steps.

Dont speak to Collectcorp on this. They are on commission.  Their only interest is to collect and earn a collection commission.  The debt may have actually been sold to them.   It is not in Collectcorp's  interest to resolve this and send it back to Rogers - they would lose the file and wouldnt make any money on it.  You need to deal only with Rogers to get it fixed.

While this is a student loan forum,  you do need some help/guidance so we're here for you.

Thank you so much for both responses.  As far as I can tell the stick  has never been used.  They certainly didn't mention it.  Your advice is much appreciated.  Thanks again.
