This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I got the newsletter today and it scared the crap out of me.

I have always been terrified of being taken to court.  The only thing that keeps me sane is knowing that this website is here and that I can get help here.

I have been on cpp disability and ontario disability since around 2006.  I still get notices that the collection agency might take my gst or taxes.  It terrifies me to think they might sue me as I look after my mother and between the two of us we get enough money to just survive.

I haven't tried to declare bankruptcy or get my loans forgiven due to disability because I hope not to draw attention to myself.

Still, the fear just got greater with this latest newsletter.  I hope it doesn't happen to me, and my sympathy goes to those who have been sued already but as I said, at least there is some help here and some people who will work with you and help you if the situation does come up.

Sorry, never meant to increase your level of stress with the newsletter.  I'll be more careful in the working next time...

I don't think there is any reason to have a greater fear. And if you are sued, it is unlikely that in your situation that things would get any worse for you.  It might even be an opportunity for you to explain to the judge that these people have been unreasonable.

I hope you can enjoy each day as it comes and put this further and further out of your mind.    A helpful NLP technique is to image the problem being further and further away from you.  That's helped me.

Any other suggestions for reducing the stress and any fear?

Liberty1 - don't worry!!! Seriously, you have many reasons not to worry - and it's true, the judge WILL look at what is a reasonable payment plan IF you do get sued. They will not make you go homeless or hungry to pay off a student loan.

I take the Feds much more seriously than the Collection Agencies who have little power.  My advice is to work with the Feds if you have loans with them first. Did you know the CA's can't take your taxes or GST or wages or house or car or boat or prize-winning showdog unless they are successful in suing you? All that crap about "we will be waiting outside your house to reposses your plasma screen tv" is BS! They have to get a judgement in COURT first before they can take anything. It will not be a surprise in the dark of the night, haha!  They lie so much, it's actually entertaining!

So, PLEASE!! Don't lose any sleep over it, it's SO not worth it.  Lookit me, I've been sued, and I couldn't be any happier!Tongue

I sort of figured I was better off than most if it ever did happen.  My last year of school was 2000, I have been on disability since 2005 or 2006.  I have never contacted anyone about my loans, basically letting sleeping dogs lie.  They dont take my gst or taxes even though they threaten to.  I dont really worry so much about the actually being sued because I figure they cant take much from me, I make just enough to barely survive...I mean there is never extra money for anything fun, just the basics...I own nothing, no car or house.  What worries me most is the whole court thing, my disability is anxiety disorders and depression...its to the point I leave the house maybe...maybe...4 or 5 times a month and I HAVE to have my brother with me to go anywhere.  Having to attend court or seeing/talking to anybody would be a nightmare for me and would likely end up with me literally crying in my room afterwards or possibly even checking in to the hospital.

But, I am familiar with Jonny and his work and I know that IF...and I think for my situation its a pretty big if...I have someone to help me out.

These forums are helpful though to help ease the anxieties of everyone and sort of figured that everyone felt the same way after that newsletter and so would come and see what all was what.

In your case Liberty the only thing they can do is acquire judgment if it is ignored. If it ever came sdown to litigation then you file a hardship demo and ask that they set it aside.

Solve Student Debt specializes in solutions for students and graduates in student loan default, and those at risk of defaulting.
