This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Give it a try.... we have nothing to lose but lots to gain.

BTW, the Ministry is useless and doesn't want to do its job.  20000 complaints about collection agencies... no investigations.... no complaints about porn packaging, 20000 investigations...

I just called the national student loan centre last week to see about getting my loan out of CRA. One of the benefits is that your monthly payments will be lower... they spread the payments out over 10 years since your date of study ended and you can also get it up to 15 years.... so in my case the payments are half of what CRA was asking for.

This is what I've done so far..

I have a student loan that was on default in 2010-11. Last week I called the NSLSC asking for an update on my account. I want to start paying off my debts. My credit report currently says that this account has been closed and transferred due to non-payment.

The rep at NSLSC said that my loan is now with CRA and that I need to contact them on having the loan brought back to NSLSC.

Today I called CRA and I was asked to pay $450+ monthly; I said that I could do $250 a month starting two months from today; the CRA rep said that they would have to send this over to the Recovery Office for approval since I am asking to pay a lower payment amount than the rep CRA can arrange for me ($450). Is this what bringing the loan back to NSLSC is? (stupid question I know).

Thank you in advance.

Just curious what happened here in the two years since this was posted by xxl... was the payment arrangement accepted by CRA?

Yes, but you won't find me. I'll send a message through your site with my email. I got thinking of how you helped clear my credit report with CRA when I read this recent article: http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2015/06/22/ontario-commits-to-closing-eviction-debt-loophole.html
