This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Johnny - looking for some insight and possible mental relief...

Moved to Ontario in 1995 from Newfoundland. Due to many hardships health and everything in between in 1998 I was advised to delcare bankruptcy. I was told this would set me free (of course it didn't), give me a fresh start and allow me to get my health in check. I was young, no family here and so very, very scared, and too trusting.

So I declare, and am discharged and the fun starts again. Find out student loans can not declared in a bankruptcy. I was devistated had ruined my credit for nothing, then find out the company I had filled with went bankrupt as well. This happened a year or so later when I called them for help with this matter. So to make a very long story short. I have never been able to pay them back. This alone has effected me in ways I can not express in mere words and haunts me daily.

So the last time I had any contact with CBV/Canada Student Loans was in 2005. I told them I could not pay and they stopped calling. I have worked but never making enough to survive and pay back. Now I am now a mother of two little girls. I never would have thought the example I would be setting would be this. I would never have attended university and put myself in this situation to "better myself" had I known.

So my question is after all this time can CBV be contacting me especially since the loan was out of province? Wouldn't it be stats barred? Can they take me to court? I trully have nothing they can take but the last of my confidence but having to go to court would be devistating.

My husband and I plan to pay as soon as we are able. I am a stay at home mom and he is not making enough for us to acknowledge CBV and start the process off again at this time. It kills me to see their number come up and know if I answer I can do nothing, and listening to the rings doing nothing is killing me. What example am I setting for two precious girls.

Johnny I have read your advice on this site and you have helped so many. When I have the money I will be contacting you for your help with this matter. In the meantime if you could let me know your thoughts it would be much appreciated.
