This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I am posting here to recommend CFW (John LeBlanc) to anyone struggling with the cost of an education in this country. Education is a right, not a privilege. Education and knowledge are public goods and are created thru time and by the many. The price of education is too high. A person going to university on a student loan has about the equivalent of Welfare to live on after paying tuition and student fees. As a working class student I always had a part-time job.

John worked with me over slightly more than two years to negotiate a settlement for a $50,000 student debt to a manageable $15,000. This would not have been possible without his guidance and effort!

I am willing to speak with people who have questions or concerns before hiring John. Reply to this post with your query, email, or phone number (anywhere in the country).

Fight for fair education for those coming thru. Demand politicians talk about the issues of affordability and access to education and training. We need educated Canadians to thrive in the 21st Century.

Can you offer me any advice? I just received an offer of settlement from the collection agency holding my $19000 federal loan. They asked for $8000 and change. The notice came after my call last week to find out about the total owing. I told them that I was looking into a proposal or bankruptcy. I would really like to negiotiate a lower amount that I can afford in a lump sum. Any help would be appreciated. Getting rid if this debt would make my life healthier and happier :)

I don't know what to tell you as that is why I hired LeBlanc. He negotiated my settlement. You could call him and see what he thinks. You are down around 0.50 on the dollar but it all depends on your situation (finances, assets, etc).
Best of luck!

Maybe I will try to negotiate. I can't afford to pay much out of pocket along with a lump sum. Thanks!
