This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

TL;DR

Skip to 6:20 in the recording - My 2nd conversation on Jan 3rd where I am ASSURED that my account is NOT delinquent, and there was no action to be taken on my end.

-Then-

Skip to 7:50 to hear the conversation that I had today, January 28th where I am told that my account is over 60 days delinquent

skip to audio recordings

From the very beginning, when I heard that our government was outsourcing loan repayment to TriCura, I knew I had to keep a close eye on them. Who is TriCura? Where exactly are your tax dollars going? Well, TriCura is a 3rd party private entity owned by Edulinx, formerly owned by Nelnet, who also owns Sallie Mae. They exist largely under the radar, with almost no Google relevance or PR presence to speak of.

TriCura is in charge of handling all federal student loan accounts, and if what you hear below is any indication, they farm out our public dollars to offshore call centres. They are becoming increasingly well known for losing people's documents, putting people into collections without telling them, or in my case, putting derogatory 30 and 60 day mark on my credit rating before I was even given the balance of my first loan payment.

Listen to three separate conversations. The first takes place on Dec. 27th, while I was waiting to hear if my November pay statement (which was required of me to process my repayment assistance application) had been received as requested. During the conversation, we discover that the statement was received but they expired my application anyways.

I made a 2nd call on January 1st, because I wanted to be 100% sure that nothing was outstanding on my end. This call confirms that my original application has been re-opened, and I am told that I must wait for an answer about when I can receive the balance of my monthly payments.

I made a 3rd call, which I didn't record around mid-January. By this call, I had received my statement and it was back-dated for payments in November. I had been anticipating this however, so I confirmed that I would be making my 1st payment at the end of January. I really, really wish I had recorded this call, because the agent said that as long as I pay by the time my repayment assistance period ends, it doesn't matter when I make my payments.

Today, I received a letter

The final recording was made today. In it, I lose my cool a little bit and I'm not proud of that.. but I was (and still am) understandably angry. TriCura has put two derogatory marks on my credit rating for an outstanding balance I couldn't have known the balance of, until I was already over 33 days late! When confronted with the stupidity of this, the agent responds with a mixture of chagrin and perhaps a hint of amusement.

Tricura is nothing more than the interal collection agency owned by the National Student Loan service Center, which is then owned by Davis and Henderson Income Fund out of Ontario. They do collections. That's it. What you have experienced here doesn't surprise me in the least.
You dig deep enough you will find Nelnet in the mix.

It makes me realize that my suspicion years ago was actually correct.  There truly is an insentive for them to "error" former students into default.  Either way they collect, whether its from the student or through government guarentees.  The whole Student Loan system is massive scam!

I was contacted in regards to this thread (and another I posted on a different board) and my loan was taken care of personally by a manager at NSLSC who assured me that they are looking into the issues I brought up.

They were very diplomatic over the phone, and wanted to let me know that they are aware of these threads and respond to them accordingly.

The slightly creepy part is that they were able to identify me just by my loan amount.

Did you tell them when you were talking to them the other day that you were going to post this online? If you did then they knew exactly where to look. LOL They eyeball everyone of my posts. Banks too.
