This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I will be posting for my wife who is having a lot of issues with Canada student loan agency, and she doesn't understand what to do.  This year we are doing our taxes together being married, and during our visit to the tax office, they printed out a paper saying that her SIN has an outstanding balance owing that must be paid.  We called this number that was printed off 1-866-336-7565 which took us to the Canadian Revenue Agency collections.  They told her on the phone that she is owing over $10,000 dollars (about $10,500) due to overdue payments and interest adding up at $1.50 per day.  She told them that she already has paid off her debt and even spoke to a woman in December 2013 on the phone confirming she was paid in full.  CRA collections person told her to call student loans at 1-888-815-4514 cause they cannot disclose any information until she sets up a payment schedule.

In December she received a letter from Canada Student Loans that she was debt free.  She was paying off her loan for the past 3-4 years while she was working.  She took out a loan for 10,000 in Ontario and after she finished her school she began to work and set up a automatic withdrawal of a few hundred dollars a month to her Student Load debt.  Also, while she was in Ontario she visited the Student Loans Office and paid in person $3,000 towards her loan before she moved to Alberta in 2012.  We both live in Alberta now and she cannot file her taxes without setting up some kind of payment with CRA collections office.

This is very frustrating to us right now.  We called the Student Loans office and they told her that they cannot disclose any information to her and she must speak to CRA collections.  But we told them we just spoke to CRA collections and they said we must call Canada student loans and this is the number they told us to call.  1-888-815-4514.  They refused to disclose anything and told us that all her loan information has been sent to CRA collections cause they couldn't contact her by phone for 4 months saying she owes money.  Which is wrong because she just spoke to them in December 2013 and they said she was in the clear.  Then she told the CRA if she does her taxes and they do take money that she doesn't owe, that she won't get her money back for a long time.  The man on the phone said "Yea, could be up to a year or more."  Why would anyone even bother borrowing? How can the CRA take your money instantly over the computer and expect you to pay ASAP, but when they have to pay you back it's put into the backroom and has absolutely no hurry to do it.  It just makes my blood boil, so criminal.

Now why won't anyone give us any information, and why are we getting the run-around with the government loans and revenue.  How can she owe money if they were automatically withdrawing from her account and stopped doing it, meaning they have no more to claim??

So far all we could do was get the CSL to send us her account information in the mail.  Maybe then we will see what is happening, I don't know. Angry

Since my experience with Canada Student loans back in 2006, when they tried to claim interest on my loan when it was already paid off for months, makes this situation even more clear.

NEVER borrow from the Canadian Student Loans Agency.

Has anyone had a similar situation, and what options do we have left.  I don't want to wait any longer cause all it will do is make this situation look worse.
