This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hello All,

I just recently got a letter from the Student loan saying that they rejected my RAP application because: 1) it wasn't signed, 2) They did not receive my paystubs, and 3) They need a copy of the Student Loan Repayment Agreement. Now, I don't mind number 3 because that was something new to me. But I do have a problem with number one and two. Student Loan did send me an email .doc form to fill out. Now I did ask the representative about hand signing it or type where it says Applicant's signature. Now I did type it in, and I got a copy with Applicant Signature highlighted. Obviously the phone rep did not take into consideration that the people making the decision want handwritten signatures. Most of the other companies that I have signed via online, still thinks that my typewritten name is considered Signature. Number two, my paystubs are on epost. People at student loan obviously are too computer illiterate to know that you can open a .pdf file and there is more than one attachment. Also apart of the paystub issue was that they wanted my June 20th one. I was going camping at that time and I didn't know that I have to send that until the first time that the rejected it and I called the representative to tell her that.

So am I the only one that has this issue?

No. Not at all. That is how the system works for everyone. Squeaky wheels get the grease though, but you have to be really squeaky.

Solve Student Debt specializes in solutions for students and graduates in student loan default, and those at risk of defaulting.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply. I just wish that the illiterate computer people at Student Loan realize that not everyone uses a printer at home anymore. It's such a headache to print if off, hand sign it, scan it back, then type out the rest. It would be just simple just to type it out. The people at Student Loan wants us to use the work photocopier to sign their agreements. I would rather do it at home.

They should also realize that most people get their paystubs through epost.ca. And my last time that I did fax (Not email because there is something wrong with that email), I did send them the proof that it was signed (I put a sticky note saying that most other companies would consider this signed), and showed them the files to my epost paystubs.

I also wrote on the cover letter to let their Customer Service people know that all their documents need to be signed by hand and not typed. I feel sorry for anybody working for Student Loan in the Customer Service end. I mean that they're the ones getting all the complains and angry phone calls. I know what it is like, because I did that for a furniture store. It's whomever is the head of Student Loans that is greedy and uncaring.
