This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I'm so scared right now and I feel sick.

I've had a collection agency leaving calls for me since the spring for a student loan that is over 10 years old. This month, I got a letter from CRA and they took my GST.

I've been unemployed for 10 years to look after my child who has a learning disorder. My profession requires annual union fees that apply penalties for each year that I don't pay. I knew I couldn't keep up with it, so I stopped paying the union fees and spent the next decade caring for my child. There is absolutely no way that I can ever go back to my previous employment. My child is closer to graduation than the years that I have been out of school. My spouse and I were living in poverty for most of the last 10 years with one year of double unemployment. We're still paying for that year of unemployment and it was just starting to feel like we obtained some hard earned breathing room...and now this.

According to my Transunion file, the original creditor is MTCU-STUDENT SUPPORT. Can I dispute this with them for keeping this information on my file for so long? I have not made any contact with the collection agency. If Transunion were to take this off of my file, would this be enough to get rid of the collection agency? Can I transfer our UCCB and GST cheques to my spouse's name to avoid having this source of income being taken? We're expecting money this summer from the government and I fear that we won't get it. We've always depended on using that money for school stuff.

My spouse makes enough to take us above the poverty line now, but we have years to go to recover. We are being good at paying our other debts, but we still live month to month with no savings. To have this extra financial burden will break our family. I want to work and to go back to school for other education opportunities (with NO loans) and to feel and be productive. I fear that even if I were to pick up a job right now that this agency would not hesitate to garnishee my wages.

While I was employed, I did try to pay down my loan. My last payment was made over 10 years ago. I can't see myself being able to pay the rest off without putting the rest of my career potential at risk to be nothing at all. My child, with a lifelong disorder, is also at risk because expenses are required for proper care of the disorder.

What can I expect and what can I do?

It certainly sounds like you are in hardship with an extenuating circumstance if I read this correctly. I would need to know a lot more though and expand on this to determine your best benefit and opportunity.  it is a very comprehensive analysis to determine cases such as this.  There is no "free" way to do this unfortunately. However, we offer a cost effective way ($99) if you want to know what your benefits, opportunities, and options after a case examination.
