This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I graduated April 2008

I applied for Repayment assistance until 2011 or 2012.
Eventually they denied me repaymwnt assistance and i did not pay them anything or have any contact with them.

I paid the Ontario portion off when it went to collections in 2011 or 2012.

I got a letter that my file will be sent to the justice department for legal action if i do not pay the entire amount of 38,000.

My questions are as follows.

1. Does applying for repayment assitance count as acknowlwdgemwnt of the debt?

2. Does paying the Ontario portion count as acknowledgemwnt of the debt?

3. What are my options?

Your earliest response will be greatly appreciated.

First of all, why can't you pay?
If you were able to pay off the provincial portion, why can't you make payments on the federal portion?

1. Does applying for repayment assistance count as acknowledgement of the debt?

Yes, it does.

2. Does paying the Ontario portion count as acknowledgement of the debt?

It does concerning the Ontario portion yes.

3. What are my options?

You:

a) Pay the amount they are demanding.

b) Don't pay the amount and defend based on whatever reason you can think of that would illustrate you do not owe this money, or should not have to pay this money.

c) Try to communicate with them and work something out. File your financial disclosure with them because they will demand it, and go from there.

d) Hire a professional to do the above for you if you cannot - or are at risk of some sort. You can hire a lawyer for big bucks or you can hire us for a lot less.

These are your options.

Thanks Johnny that really helps me figure things out.

I am thinking to contact the CRA, I do not want to go through the whole monthly repayment system again its a crap shoot.

I am.more inclined to negotiate and come to terms on a single one time payment to take care of this.

In your experience is this something that is possible?

How should I approch them to make it happen?

What amount based on the 38k i owe, would be something they will be inclined to accept? I was thinking in the range of 20k.

Thanks man.

Yes, it is possible but every case is graded based on the individual. You shouldn't approach them in a way that leaves yourself open and vulnerable. You are not pitching to a bank or collector agency here. In order to get them to accept it - you have to give them a reason to do it. Unless you can do that you will not succeed. I can;t tell you what to do or how to approach it without knowing your individual circumstances. what worked for John doe and Mary Kaye may not work for you.

Secondly, if you do not know how to properly communicate with them (Canada Revenue agency) and safeguard yourself then you are swimming in uncharted and treacherous waters. Their primary goal is to secure money for the Crown. Truth matters less.

If you are offering 20K on 38K, their questions are going to be many. If there is a way they can put a thumb down on you then you will be under it, simply put.

I do these types of appeals for the compromise for student loan borrowers and in many cases it is a VERY lengthy, time consuming, and huge undertaking.

If you plan on doing this on your own then be very careful what you say, how you say it, what you provide, and how you word it. That is all I can really say.

Good luck with it!
