This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

Hello,

Omigod.  I came home to a letter from the CIBC National Student Centre and all the hell and anguish from longer ago than I can remember came back to me.  My loans were written off years ago - maybe 10 - 15 years??  There was a rule at the time that no student would have to pay back student loans for longer than - was it 20 or 25 years??  And I paid but when I reached the 25 year mark I rec'd several paid in full letters for the fed and provincial loans.  So much time went by and I was so sick and tired of looking at my shoe box full of receipts and ancient invoices from as far back as 1989 that I threw them out!!!!

I'm retired now.  The letter I rec'd today says that I have 15 days to pay them $11K and there is a  payment due date of Jan. 2017.  I rec'd nothing in all these years until today.  Any advice??  I remember what these people were like and is it just their word against mine??  Do I have to prove that I repaid my loans?  Even income tax papers can be tossed after 8 years.  But student loans never? I didn't think I'd be back on this forum again.  How is everyone?

thanks,
Old Hippy

Yes, and it wasn't easy.  I called and asked if I could escalate the call.  Collection calls had started coming.  My calls were going around in circles and not getting anywhere until I called the CIBC help line (for regular banking requests).  He was amazing and went out of his way to get me the number of a higher up person to talk to.  That's all I wanted.  To find out what was going on.  I had also contacted a government branch - can't remember which one but I put in a consumer complaint about student loan letters being sent out years later and scaring people half to death.  That was effective because they called CIBC student loans back to find out what was going on.

Weeks later it was confirmed that the give us money or we send you to collections letter was sent to me in error.  Something about putting payments on hold because of covid and then when they were taken off hold, they accidentally sent out letters to probably a lot of people for old debts.  Some things never change.

Keep all the paperwork forever and get a PAID IN FULL letter when your student loan is written off.

Best wishes to everyone,
Old Hippy

Sorry for the delay in moderating and approving your post.  The site has been quiet and a glitch meant the "new posts for moderation" message did not go out.

Really glad you got this resolved!
