This website is a testimony to the problems Canadian Student Loan borrowers experienced from approximately 1996 to 2008 and until their loans were paid off.

The privatization of the Student Loans system by the Chretien and Martin Liberal governments broke the system and defaulted thousands of borrowers who were trying to pay their loans. There were even stories of suicide due to the harassment of borrowers.

Read the report that I prepared back in 2007 here. Canada Student Loans-The Need for Change Fortunately the new Conservative government at the time revamped the program and fixed the system for new borrowers, but borrowers under the previous program were left with ruined credit and continued harassment from debt collectors.

I call on the Canadian Government to apologize to the borrowers affected by this fiasco and make amends.

Unfortunately the Liberal government is again clobbering the Education system with their upcoming changes to International Student Visas. Yes, there's a problem, but instead of a well thought out plan, they have pulled the emergency brake on the train causing a derailment. This has introduced unprecedented instability for both private and public education institutions who serve both international and local students.

Universities can't plan. I've heard of courses being cut because the government has no process in place for universities to send the newly required acceptance letters to the government.

This means that students who have been accepted can not attend courses that start in the summer 2024 semester. With cut sections, current Canadian students will have trouble getting courses, and may have to switch to part-time which changes their enrollment status and might trigger repayment of their loans or ineligibility for funding. I've seen this before. It wreaks havoc on the student loan borrowers.

Again, the Liberal government has messed up the education environment. Will the new system needed in a rush for the acceptance letters be the new Arrivecan scandal?

I call on the government to implement a slower phased in approach and delay the requirement of the acceptance letters until a process is in place to submit these letters.

I've got a fair number of student loans, and I'm still a student. I've just found out I have a permanent disability that will likely mean dropping out of school, and render me unable to work. What can I do? I'm married - does my husband's income get factored into the permanent disability calculations? It doesn't seem fair that he should be expected to pay for student loans I took out before we were married. I don't know what to do or who to turn to.  A friend of mine was told by debt collectors that she could go to jail if she didn't pay back student loans, is this true? I didn't think that was possible.  I'm very scared and confused, can someone tell me if they've been in this situation, or know someone who is or was?

Thanks

Don't let the vultures scare you. Trust me I have been there. I too have been told that I could be jailed for non payment, and that they can take my vehicle and blah blah blah. The best one they ever told me is that "they know where I lived". Like duh: they had my address so they should know.

These are just scare tactics, and threats. This is just to scare you into paying what you can not afford to pay. They don't care if you hit someone over the head to get money from, all they care about is getting their money so that they can get a commission.

I think there are forms that can be filled out if one has a disabilty, call the Student Loans Center and ask them.

As for the financial information, I would just report your income and your income only. I too am in a relationship and I only report my income. As my boyfriend has nothing to do with my student loan mess, it was before his time.

Good luck, and don't let the vultures get to you.
If you can pay them $ 10 or whatever, then do so. If you can't then you can't and this is the best that you can do. If they are harassing you, write them a letter and tell them not to.

Good luck....

Thanks for the commiseration :)  I asked for the forms, they're being sent to me.  I had to give three different people my name and SIN to get the form, I can't imagine how complicated all this is going to get ... :(

So it's not possible for you to go to jail? It's not a crime, right, so it shouldn't be.  I don't have a car. I think the house is in both of our names, even though I've paid nothing toward it ... what should I do about that, any ideas?

Things will only get better.

As forthe house, it is better if it is in both names.
They can't touch it.

No having student loans is not a crime.

Even if you had a car, they could not touch it.
It is a secured asset. The car if anything owing on it, belongs to the finance company, the same applies to the mortgage.

You have to live first, this is priority.

You are not the only one out there who is going thru this mess, so don't feel as though you are. There are many of us in the same boat.

I try not to let my student loan problems get to me, because when I do, it makes for a nasty home life, and my current family had nothing to do with my student loans.

Good luck
