Hello All;
This is my second post on the forum, the first one was about a month ago, when I had officially been served by Attorney General of Canada regarding a federal student loan I had defaulted on. At that time I was in a state of panic and literally threw up a couple of times as the thought of court hearings and wage garnishments etc were too much for me to handle.
Now just a month later my situation has completely changed, and I feel more relaxed than I have in last 7-8 years (that is just about the total time I have had my loan in default)  all thanks to John and Heather at CFW group.
To give a bit of a background, I defaulted on student loans in 2007, at that time I did make an effort to get some sort of interest relief but as per the criteria of Canada Student loans, i didn't qualify for that (something I still don't understand as my pay  was barely enough to pay for rent and food).
From that point onwards, my student loan has been one never ending nightmare, my credit got screwed, CRA started holding my tax returns, collection agencies were after me and for at least last one year, I have been hiding away from process servers. But it was only last month, when I finally got served, that I decided to seek professional help, and that is when CFW group came into the picture.
The first person I talked to was Heather, who was every empathetic to my situation, she assured me that I was certainly not the first one to be in such a mess, and they deal with such situations on a daily bases. The next week I talked to John for the first time, and it was during that conversation, I realized that I have made the right decision. John explained the whole process to me, and discussed our possible course of action from that point onwards. We went over the fee I was to pay for his services (which btw are very reasonable) and then a few emails and couple of weeks later, I had in my hands, a copy of settlement, which was even better than what I had initially expected.
Now I must clarify that my student debt worries are far from being over, but this is certainly a step in right direction, the law suit has gone away and collection calls have stopped. I do look forward to working with John, over the course of next few years, and  being free of student debt one day.
One last thing I would like to mention is that before I decided to work with CFW group, a number of people I talked to suggested that I can contact the law firm directly and can come up with a settlement myself.
Well, that might work out for some people, but from my past experience, I did try to make a payment arrangement myself in 2011, which was not very successful, the amount we ended up agreeing to was much more than I could afford and  could not continue making payments after about 6 months or so, which obviously did not bring my debt down but did end up resetting the clock for statue of limitations. So in my opinion the fee I paid to CFW group was certainly worth the service I received.
I do plan on posting a follow up to this post in few months time, to give you all an update.
Regards
Ali.
