Hi There,

I finished my study on Aug. 31, 2016. My OSAP balance is about 51,000$ and estimated monthly payment is about 600$, which I can not afford to pay. I am married and have a contract position. Family income is about 5,000$ monthly. However given other bills and mortgage, actually nothing would left to go to OSAP.

I did talk to NSLC and I was advised that since you are getting paid above the cap you would not be qualified for "Repayment Assistant Program" and the affordable payment would be 580$!!!! only 20$ less than regular payment!!!!

It seems that personal reasonable costs would not be considered for the affordable payments. Would you please advise what should I do?

In addition, I have been overpaid during my study for about 3000$ and that is why OSOG was not applied in my case to reduce my annual debt to about 11,000$ any help in that regard too?

Thanks

If you are facing default unless you pay what they want then you have to consider all options. If you have established credit and are in good standings and posture with it (credit products in use) then it will be less of an impact. Many people are frightened to death about credit scores and that is something the governments use to their advantage. Just like threats of legal proceedings.  The system is designed to collect money and do so by whatever means necessary without breaking the law.

You are at the mercy of the system I am afraid to say. If you are in a bad spot and end up in default then you actually have better options than you do while in good standing. It amazes me how blind the system is still to this day.

So, provincial governments who are involved in direct lending  or charged with recovering their own post default use credit reporting as a the primary tool in the same manner as creditors do. They learn this mentality and business behavior from the banks and financial community.

People are so focused on having the "perfect" credit score and unfortunately people put all of they hope, focus, and energy into a number. Numbers matter less than relationships. It is a proven fact. S, if you have relationships with the financial community already then it is less of a burden than if you have none, or an already bad one. This is what the governments, banking community, and and financial/debt recovery industry does not want you to think about or know.

This is just the tip of the knowledge based iceberg that the system doesn't want you to know.

I hope you get through this.

OP,  although there is something to be said for Johnny's credit score comments, you do NOT want to abuse your credit with non-payment of your student loan.  Rebuilding and maintaining my credit allowed me to finally pay off the Ontario portion of my student loan, and put everything else back in good standing.  Allowing your credit to falter will make it much much harder for you to renegotiate your mortgage when its time for renewal.  You have 6 months(?), to find a solution until your first payment.

What does your credit look like right now?  Do you have balance transfer offers available on your credit cards?  Can you qualify for HELOC on your house.  Obviously, you can't maintain yourself indefinitely this way.  In the end, you will need to find a way to cut back on your expenses, or increase your income.

Yes there is always something to be said by you about things I post. LOL

Who is abusing credit? Anyone who has the means to pay should pay. Sometimes credit is a means in the event a person can actually afford to repay what they extend out using credit. Those who can't should have better options and assistance. That's all.

I agree with what you say Royal. It is all relevant.

Yes, because your post has a large hint of "victim" in it.  That's what I did too back in 2006 and it cost me a lot of hell.

A person like the OP may be in tough spot, but he does have options.  He needs to find a way to exploit those options while he thinks of ways to reduces his expenses and increase his income.  That's why I am suggesting using his established credit through balance transfers or HELOC to buy himself time.

Don't put yourself in default OP, unless you're absolutely desperate.  It will cost you far more than you save.

I am about to submit an appeal letter since my affordable payment is so high!

Do you have any update on your case?

Thanks,

Affordable payment is their calculation, and it is high. It's all about money to them. Nothing has changed despite the new look,
