Hello, I have recently been forgiven for my Federal & Provincial (AB) student loans because of my severe disability. My health condition is not going to heal anytime soon and brought me to my knees, and I am now collecting ODSP. I have good days and bad days, however my self-esteem is really low. My credit rating is below non exsistent because of my student loans. I have been mentally ill since my youth, however I was never accurately diagnosed and treated properly in the hospital until approx, four years back. I am not a young person either and feel hopeless over this situation.
I want to ask, would I be allowed to work one day a week, just for my self-esteem if anybody would hire me and would the CRA collections agency take my student loan forgiveness away?

I know I could never take care of myself financially because of my disabilities, but it sure would be nice to feel that I am contributing. Please provide any information relating to my situation, thank you.

That is something you will have to ask social development Canada and perhaps the Alberta Student Finance about. They are the ones who hold policy and legislation on those sorts of things.

I have the same question. Any update on that?

It's certainly a good question. In my experience, if you are forgiven, you are forgiven. If it is out of active recovery, same gig. However, with the feds, they have a policy and that is "if your situation changes, it is your duty to contact them to advise. You MAY be required to commence repayment of that loan."

Now, if you are back in the workforce, making decent money, and benefiting from the education the crown gave you money for, then it's a no-brainer. You notify them - or risk getting caught. The gambit is real in such a case.

If you have an engineering degree, and the student loan has been set aside due to hardship, and you want to do what it is that you described, then the likelihood of them snapping your benefit off I think would be slim. But, bear in mind, if you say to them you are unable to work, and you are able to work, that also presents a potential issue.

Would you like me to try and see what I can find that is more tangible from the system as far as this is concerned?
